Wellesley Softball Falls to Middlebury, No. 18 Wisconsin-Whitewater in Florida Finale

CLERMONT, Fla. – Wellesley College softball wrapped up play at THE Spring Games at Legends Way Ballfields with competitive losses versus Middlebury College and No. 18 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Friday.

Game 1 | Middlebury 7, Wellesley 6 | Final

A two-run homer from junior Jennifer Westphal (Westport, Conn.) made the difference as Middlebury (10-3) won a tightly contested 7-6 game.

The Panthers struck, putting two tallies on the board in the top of the first, courtesy of a single by first year Uma Corcoran (Ramsey, N.J.). Wellesley wasted no time in its counter attack - scoring four in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Anisa Rodrgiuez (La Quinta, Calif.) continued a hot streak with a triple to right that brought home classmate Alena Mulhern (Kingston, Mass.). Rodrgiuez came home on a grounder to short by first year Ruijia Yang (Berwyn, Pa.).

Later in the inning, sophomore Giana Jones (Fairfield, Calif.) and first year Natalie Nicol (Latexo, Texas) each singled in a run. Jones and first year Brynne Mellady (Ellicott City, Md.) both cross the plate.

First year Emily Ye laced a hit over the center field fence for Middlebury in the second inning, making the game 4-3. Mellady gave Wellesley a fifth run with an RBI single that plated Rodriguez.

Corcoran once again made it a one-run game, 5-4, in the top half of the third on a sacrifice fly. Two innings later, Corcoran evened the scored a five apiece with a single through the left side.

A fielding error allowed Blue senior Charis Chung (San Gabriel, Calif.) to advance home in the fifth, putting Wellesley ahead 6-5. Westphal dealt the game-winning damage to the Blue with the deep ball in the top of the sixth inning.

While Wellesley junior Emeline Gaunce (Los Altos, Calif.) singled and advanced to second in the latter half of the seventh, Ye induced a pop up to end the game.

After Wellesley chased senior Samantha Hausman (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) in the first, Ye only allowed two runs, one earned, in 6.2 innings of relief, striking out six along the way.

Senior Lauren Young (Fresno, Calif.) tossed all seven innings for the Blue, allowing 13 base runners while punching out seven.

Game 2 | No. 18 Wisconsin-Whitewater 4, Wellesley 1 | Final

Mulhern opened the game with a leadoff double. After a sac bunt pushed Mulhern to third, the sophomore later scored on an error during a double steal to give the Blue a 1-0 lead.

The Warhawks (10-0) got on the board in the fourth to tie the game. With two outs, first-year Dani Peshia (Newark, Ill.) doubled. First-year Bree Loushine (Madison, Wis.), who pinch ran for Peshia, came around on an RBI single by junior Auburn Roberson (South Elgin, Ill.) with the equalizer.

In the fifth, senior Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis.) put the Warhawks on top with a solo home run, the third of the season, to deep center. The team added two more runs for a 4-1 lead. Senior Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis.) doubled in a run and then scored on a sac fly by senior Brooke Mangler (Gurnee, Ill.).

Sophomore Sarah Wicker (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) took the loss with four earned runs in five innings and three strikeouts. First-year Bella Hassett (North Granby, Conn.) tossed a clean inning of relief.

Sophomore Rhiann Dick (Palatine, Ill.) earned the victory for the Warhawks after five innings with one run on one hit. First-year Karman Rowe (Villa Park, Ill.) earned the save with two innings of relief.

The Blue will return to action on Wednesday, March 26 for its home opener with Nichols College at 3:00 PM & 5:00 PM.
