ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Wellesley College golf sophomore Audrey Wang (Fremont, Calif.) won the 120-person individual competition while the team maintained its place on the podium with a third place showing amongst a 24-team field at the 21st annual Jekyll Island Women's Collegiate Invitational. The Blue finished the three day event with a team score of 896 (306-298-292). The 54-hole tournament took place at the par-72 King and Prince Golf Course.
Wang started the day with eight pars before birdieing the ninth to go one under on the outward nine. A late pair of birdies helped Wang card a 70 (-2) and finish with a 216 (75-71-70) to beat out Emory's Sharon Mun (Duluth, Ga.) by one stroke for first place. Wang's final two days mark a Blue program record for the lowest consecutive day 36-hole score of 141.
No. 2 Emory University finished atop the team standings with a final score of 882 (297-298-287). No. 1 Carnegie Mellon University collected silver with a 883 (294-304-285). After the Blue in third, No. 8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (910 -315-294-301) and No. 18 Denison University (933 - 319-314-300) finished off the top five finishers.
Sophomore Sarah Yeh (Danville, Calif.) went even on the opening side with a pair of birdies and bogeys sandwiched between five pars. Birdies on the 17th and 18th helped Yeh finish Sunday with a 72 (E) and tied for fourth out of all individuals with a score of 218 (76-70-72)
First-year Savannah Boyd (Shanghai, China) was one over on the front with eight pars. The first-year finished the weekend by going a stroke under on the back nine to end the day with a 72. The performance put Boyd in a tie for 25th at the end of the tournament, shooting a 231 (78-81-72).
Sophomore Aileen Du (Auckland, New Zealand) finished day three with a scorecard that read 78 (+6). Du's overall three-day score of 234 (77-79-78), good for 35th.
Sophomore Grace Sun (San Diego, Calif.) opened the day with a birdie before shooting a +5 on the out. Sun finished the back nine one stroke over for a 78 on the day. The sophomore's 54-hole scoreline of 238 (82-78-78), tying for 47th.
Additionally, four members of the Blue competed at the individual invitational at the Par-72 Indian Mound Course.
First-year Sophie Lim (Boston, Mass.) shot a 77 (+5) on Sunday and won the 15-person tournament with a final score of 235. Sophomores Sophia Lewis (Ventura, Calif.) and Kaurvaki Bajpai (Chantilly, Va.) both ended up with a final score of 241 to tie for second place. Lewis ended Sunday with a 76 (+4) while Bajpai's final 18 holes resulted in a 79 (+7).
First-year Grace Yuan (Beijing, China) rounded out the competitors, carding a 77 (+5) in the finale for a 54-hole score of 243 and to claim fifth.
Wellesley golf travels to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. next Saturday, March 29 and Sunday, March 30 to take part in the Vassar Invitational and Vassar Invitational II.
