MEDFORD, Mass. – Wellesley College fencing sophomore Lauren Khoo (San Francisco, Calif.) made the final round in foil as the Blue wrapped up the 2024-25 season at the NCAA Northeast Regional. 10 members of the team competed on Sunday at Tufts University.
Khoo advanced through the initial round, quarterfinal and semifinals with flying colors. The sophomore ultimately finished 12th out of 52 total competitors in Women's Foil. Khoo was the only NCAA Division III fencer to advance to the finals in foil.
In addition to Khoo, junior Gina Huang (Taipei, Taiwan), sophomore Alisha Li (Warren, N.J.) and first years Renee Sun (Houston, Texas) and Judy Bang (Seoul, South Korea) each progressed to the quarterfinal round. Huang and Li both finished in the top-30 of their respective weapons.
Women's Foil
In the semifinals, Khoo split the six matches with three wins and three losses and a +3 touch ratio. Khoo advanced to the finals as a No. 9 seed. Khoo won a single finals bout while narrowly falling 5-4 to a pair of Olympians.
Before that, Khoo went 3-3 in the quarters with a 0 touch ratio, and went through to the semifinals. Earlier, Khoo finished second out of all initial round foil participants, going 4-0 with a +15 touch ratio to push forward in the quarterfinals.
Huang was victorious in two initial round bouts, producing a +2 touch ratio to get into the quarterfinals. Huang grabbed a pair of quarterfinal tallies but failed to advance, ending the day in 26th place.
First year Daisy Wiseman (Austin, Texas) nabbed a win in the initial round but failed to continue on, claiming 44th with a -8 touch ratio.
Women's Epee
Li went 3-1 in initial round play with a +2 touch ratio, earning a quarterfinal appearance. The sophomore finished 3-3 in the quarterfinals but was unable to advance, earning 24th place overall.
Sun also scored three initial round victories with a +8 touch ratio to move on to the quarterfinals. The rookie went 1-5 in the quarterfinals and didn't advance, collecting 33rd.
Junior Grace Xu (Toronto, Ontario) went 2-2 in the initial round with a +1 ratio, but narrowly missed the cut, taking 38th overall. First year Julia Peeler (Fairfax, Va.) placed 57th in the initial round with a -7 touch ratio.
Women' Sabre
Bang won all four opening round bouts to advance to the quarterfinals. The first year was eliminated in the quarterfinals, taking 34th overall.
Senior Makana Burch (Portland, Ore.) scored one initial round victory and finished 47th with a -8 touch ratio. Sophomore Rebecca Hsieh (Annadale, Va.) tied for 49th with a -15 touch ratio.
