STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Wellesley College track & field began the 2026 calendar year at the Gotham Cup, hosted at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Friday. The competition featured several Division I and II programs.
In the 3000m competition, Senior Emily Brydges (Suffield, Conn.) earned a New England DIII Championship, setting a PR at 10:24.41. Classmate Ella Whinney (Madison, Wis.) put together a 10:46.27 race while senior Caelan Schretzmayer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) touched the finish line at 11:51.81.
Sophomore Ellie Wolf (Irvine, Calif.) had a highlight in the 200m, collecting 22nd out of 64 runners with a 26.44, which earned a New England DIII Championship cut. First-year Kaia Lam (Brooklyn, N.Y.) received 39th after running a 27.41.
In the High Jump competition, first-year Sophia Wang (Livingston, N.J.) recorded a fifth place showing, jumping 1.55m. Wang also bettered a previous distance in the Triple Jump, hitting 10.88m, .05 off of a Blue program best. First-years Christina Yan (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) (9.86m) and Shriya Kundranda (Scottsdale, Ariz.) (9.43m) also competed in the Triple Jump.
In the 60m dash, Wolf recorded an 8.31 second time. The performance ties a personal-best for Wolf, and was a mere .01 off of a New England DIII Championship cut. Lam hit the finish line at 8.48 seconds.
First-year Avery Lieb (Ojai, Calif.) earned fourth in the 5000m race with a time of 19:48.85. Junior Perry Huang Kemper (Boise, Idaho) was seventh in the event at 20:42.32.
For the Mile event, senior Claire Peng (Chapel Hill, N.C.) finished in 12th at 5:22.31, within one second of a New England DIII Championship cut. First-year Zoë Cort (San Francisco, Calif.) crossed at 5:32.09, good for 21st place. Classmate Bela Kumar (Natick, Mass.) completed the race in 5:59.38.
Senior Sara Maeve Klingensmith (Chapel Hill, N.C.) came in 22nd out of 41 in the 400m, hitting the finish line at 1:03.17.
Sophomore Leah Willis (Mercersburg, Pa.) ran a 3:15.05 and was 22nd in the 1000m. Classmate Helen Yang (Woodland Hills, Calif.) completed the race in 3:31.99.
First-year Sophia Trabuco (Rochester, Minn.) (2:30.65) and sophomore Leeya Rice (Closter, N.J.) (2:30.72) placed 14th and 15th in the 800m respectively.
First-year Madalena Ritz-Meuret (Dallas, Texas) competed in the 500m event and completed the race in 1:27.14.
Sophomore Julia Carmona (Bronx, N.Y.) ( personal-best 9.72m) and senior Dova Koretsky (Pepperell, Mass.) (8.67m) both took part in the Weight Throw.
Cort, Rice, Willis and Trabuco teamed up in the 4x800m Relay to end up third out of six entrants at 10:11.83.
Wellesley returns to competition on Saturday, January 24 at Springfield College's Massasoit Classic.
