Fencing Defeats Host Jumbos at Tufts Invitational

MEDFORD, Mass. – Wellesley College fencing returned from winter break at the Tufts Invitational on Sunday. The team was able to defeat the host Jumbos, while competing well with Division I programs in Northwestern University, Cornell University and Brown University.

Wellesley 15, Tufts 12

Foil won 6-3. First-year Viola Qian (Jiangsu, China) swept three matches, senior Gina Huang (Taipei, Taiwan) tallied twice and junior Lauren Khoo (San Francisco, Calif.) added one bout. Epee squeaked out a 5-4 decision. First-year Elaine Lin (Flushing, N.Y.) was victorious in all three matches while seniors Michelle Pan (Arlington, Mass.) and Grace Xu (Toronto, Ontario) added the  fourth and fifth wins. In sabre, first-year Alice Wang (Newport Beach, Calif.) went 2-1 while classmates Rai Henry (Takoma Park, Md.) and Lauren Lee (San Diego, Calif.) each added a win.

Northwestern 20, Wellesley 7

Xu picked up two matches over the Division I foe. Wang and classmate Joy Xu (Shanghai, China) both earned one victory in sabre. Huang earned the lone win in foil.

Cornell 17, Wellesley 10

In the penultimate match of the day, Epee stayed competitive with its high level opponent, taking four of nine points. G. Xu defeated a pair of foes while sophomores Julia Peeler (Fairfax, Va.) and Sissi Zou (Shanghai, China) both added wins. Henry and Wang both took a win off of the Big Red in sabre. Huang and sophomore Daisy Wiseman (Austin, Texas) each recorded a victory in foil.

Brown 19, Wellesley 8

Khoo notched a pair of victories in foil and Qian recorded the third point. Henry, Lee and J. Xu all came away with one triumph in sabre. Zou registered both of epee's tallies.

Next up, Wellesley plays host for the Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) meet on Sunday, January 25.
