POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Wellesley College fencing had an impressive 7-2 showing at the annual Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) Championships, hosted by Vassar College. Wellesley finished third out of 10 as a team, with foil and sabre both finishing third in their respective squads.
Head Coach Rob Charlton and Assistant Coaches Carter Bartram and Harrison Hue all received the EWFC Coaching Staff of the Year honor at the meet.
Foil went 7-2 and during a stretch won 9-0 in four consecutive matches. Senior Leena Hobson (Oakland, Calif.) had a standout day, going 13-1. Junior Lauren Khoo (San Francisco, Calif.), sophomore Daisy Wiseman (Austin, Texas) and first-year Viola Qian (Jiangsu, China) all conclude the competition with double-digit victories.
The sabre squad won seven matches. First-year Lauren Lee (San Diego, Calif.) registered the high-mark with 13 wins on the day. Classmate Alice Wang (Newport Beach, Calif.) went 11-1 while Rai Henry (Takoma Park, Md.) (10-3), Joy Xu (Shanghai, China) (9-1) and junior Rebecca Hsieh (Annadale, Va.) (8-0) all had impressive records.
Epee was the victor in five matches. Senior Michelle Pan (Arlington, Mass.) and sophomore Julia Peeler (Fairfax, Va.) were the squad leaders with a dozen wins each.Â
Wellesley 26, CCNY 1
Sabre and foil both recorded clean sweeps while epee won eight out of nine points. Hobson, Pan, Peeler, Wiseman, Henry, Lee, Qian, A. Wang and J. Xu were all undefeated in their respective weapons. Senior Lily Millard (Selkirk, N.Y.) added two victories in epee.
Tufts 16, Wellesley 11
Sabre dropped a narrow 5-4 match to the Jumbos with two wins from both Henry and A. Wang. Foil had an identical scoreline, with the tallies courtesy of Khoo (3) and senior Gina Huang (Taipei, Taiwan) (1). Senior Grace Xu (Toronto, Ontario) picked up two of epee's three bout wins while first-year Elaine Lin (Flushing, N.Y.) added one triumph.
Wellesley 20, Drew 7
Sabre earned another shutout, with sophomore Judy Bang (Seoul, South Korea), Henry, Lee and J. Xu teaming up for the 9-0 scoreline. Hobson, Qian and first-year Emma Fung (Saratoga, Calif.) all went 2-1 in foil to help the squad to a 6-3 win. Epee advanced past its foe, 5-4. Peeler and sophomore Renee Sun (The Woodlands, Texas) both won on two occasions while Pan scored the decisive fifth victory.
Johns Hopkins 18, Wellesley 8
Epee had the closest match against the Bluejays, narrowly falling 5-4. Sabre earned a pair of tallies on the scoresheet. Henry and senior Naomi Wang (Boston, Mass.) both won a match. Khoo and Fung would each record a win in foil. Lin was victorious on two occasions and G. Xu and Sun both supplied a tally.
Wellesley 20, Haverford 7
Foil had a perfect 9-0 showing with Fung, Hobson and Qian vanquishing all of their opponents. Sabre registered a 7-2 win. Henry, J. Xu and Hsieh all had 2-0 showing while Lee tacked on the seventh win. Epee totaled four wins. Pan topped two bouts while Peeler and Millard each won once.
Wellesley 20, Vassar 7
Once again, foil swept its opponent, this time with Huang, Khoo and Wiseman dealing the damage. Sabre snagged six victories, three from Lee, two from Bang and one by N. Wang. G. Xu's 3-0 showing in epee led the unit to a 5-4 victory. Lin gave epee its remaining two points.Â
Wellesley 27, Yeshiva 0
The team won 100% of its matches against Yeshiva. Hsieh, N. Wang and J. Xu were all spotless in sabre. Fung, Hobson and Wiseman toppled their foes in foil. Epee's shutout featured 3-0 performances from Millard, Pan and Peeler.
Wellesley 25, Hunter 2
Foil had another nine for nine win rate with wins from Hobson, Huang, Khoo, Qian and Wiseman. Sabre only dropped a single match, with eight wins total from Hsieh, A. Wang and J. Xu. Epee also won eight bouts, with Millard and Peeler going 3-0 and Pan winning twice.
Wellesley 17, Stevens 10
Sabre ended the day with one final 9-0 showcase. Bang, Henry, Lee and A. Wang didn't drop a single bout against the Ducks. Foil earned one more win, 5-4, with three victories from Khoo and two from Huang. Epee ended with three triumphs, one by Pan, Sun and G. Xu.
Wellesley will return to competition on Saturday, February 28 at the rescheduled Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) meet, hosted at Boston College.
