NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Wellesley College track & field won many events at the Peter de Villiers Cup quad-meet with host Smith College, Mount Holyoke College and Bryn Mawr College on Friday. Smith won the meet by a single point, with 71 points barely squeaking past the Blue's 70. Mount Holyoke and Bryn Mawr tied for third with 13 points.
Senior Kenya Francis (Atlanta, Ga.), who set the Blue program record in the Weight Throw last week, bettered her own program mark with a 14.90m throw that earned first. Sophomore Maya Sharar (Andover, Mass.) landed a personal-best mark with a 13.13m toss. Sophomore Maggie Berlinger (Ashby, Mass.) took fourth at 11.85m while classmate Julia Carmona (Bronx, N.Y.) finished seventh with a distance of 10.54m.
Francis also won the Shot Put with a 10.16m distance. Sharar's 9.62m throw was good for third place.Â
Senior Ella Whinney (Madison, Wis.) dominated the 1000m, earning a New England DIII Championship auto mark at 3:00.10. The time currently sits at No. 25 in NCAA Division III this year. First-year Sophia Trabuco (Rochester, Minn.) came in third place, earning a New England DIII cut with a 3:09.48.
First-year Sophia Wang (Livingston, N.J.) won the High Jump, clearing the bar at 1.58m. Whinney finished in second place, making regionals with a 1.53m height.
Wang came just .02 off a program record in the Triple Jump, reaching 10.91m, which currently ranks No. 98 in NCAA Division III this season, to take silver. Senior Claire Peng (Chapel Hill, N.C.) claimed fifth at 10.05m.
Sophomore Ellie Wolf (Irvine, Calif.) was the 60m champion, with a personal-best time of 8.15. First-year Shriya Kundranda (Scottsdale, Ariz.) placed seventh with a 8.73 while sophomore Abigail Choi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) took eighth at 8.75.
Wolf collected second in the 200m, completing the race in 26.86. First-year Christina Yan (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) was fourth in the event with a time of 28.72.
In the 3000m, Seniors Emily Brydges (Suffield, Conn.) (10:25.68) and Simone Beauchamp (Aurora, Colo.) (10:27.93) went 2-3. Senior Elise Lanahan (Greenville, S.C.) (11:10.46), first-year Avery Lieb (Ojai, Calif.) (11:26.18), first-year Cadence Chang (Boston, Mass.) (11:29.20), first-year Bela Kumar (Natick, Mass.) (11:39.22), sophomore Addie Maguire (Oakland, Calif.) (11:47.95), first-year Dylan Burmeister (Nobleboro, Maine) (12:01.45) and senior Caelan Schretzmayer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) (12:01.48) all raced in the 3000m.
In the 600m, sophomore Leeya Rice (Closter, N.J.) ran a 1:41.58 that currently ranks 93rd in NCAA Division III and earned a New England DIII Championship mark.
Peng later snagged second in the Mile, running a 5:24.53. First-year Zoë Cort (San Francisco, Calif.) collected bronze, hitting the finish line at 5:27.18. Sophomore Helen Yang (Woodland Hills, Calif.) (5th - 5:44.11) and junior Perry Huang Kemper (Boise, Idaho) (6th - 5:48.99) also raced.
Senior Sara Maeve Klingensmith (Chapel Hill, N.C.) was the Long Jump runner-up, hitting a New England DIII Championship mark of 5.11m.Â
Klingensmith made it two runner-up showings in the 400m, earning a New England DIII Championship cut by finishing in 1:01.12. First-year Madalena Ritz-Meuret (Dallas, Texas) grabbed sixth with a time of 1:05.42.
Wang (10.50) and Kundranda (11.95) took fourth and fifth in the 60m Hurdles respectively.Â
The 4x200m Relay team of Klingensmith, Wolf, Yan and Choi took second with a time of 1:51.66.
The Distance Medley Relay ended the day with a 13:01.19 performance by Whinney, Peng, Rice and Trabuco to take gold.
Next up, certain members of the team will be competing in the New England DIII Championships at the TRACK at New Balance in Boston, Mass. on Sunday, March 1.
