CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Wellesley College fencing had an impressive 5-2 day at Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) Meet on Saturday. Highlights included key wins over Division III foes Brandeis University and MIT, while narrowly falling 14-13 to Division I Brown University. Wellesley's 36 wins this season mark a program single-season high.
Wellesley 16, Brandeis 11
Foil earned a definitive 8-1 win over the Judges. Junior Lauren Khoo (San Francisco, Calif.) and first-year Emma Fung (Saratoga, Calif.) both went 3-0 while senior Gina Huang (Taipei, Taiwan) won twice. Epee and sabre both took four bout wins. Epee saw senior Grace Xu (Toronto, Ontario) win twice and sophomore Renee Sun (The Woodlands, Texas) and first-year Elaine Lin (Flushing, N.Y.) both add a tally. Sabre was led by a pair of triumphs by first-year Alice Wang (Newport Beach, Calif.) and a win from first-years Rai Henry (Takoma Park, Md.) and Lauren Lee (San Diego, Calif.).
Boston College 18, Wellesley 9
Epee snuck by its DI foe with a 5-4 decision. Lin and Sun grabbed a pair of wins while Xu added the decisive fifth mark. Foil's three victories came courtesy of two from first-year Viola Qian (Jiangsu, China) and one from Fung. The lone sabre tally came from Henry.
Brown 14, Wellesley 13
Khoo swept foil while Fung and Huang won the fourth and fifth points respectively. Sun won a pair of epee bouts and Xu and sophomore Julia Peeler (Fairfax, Va.) both claimed a win. Sabre won four points. Henry defeated two opponents while Lee and Wang both notched a win.
Wellesley 21, Sacred Heart 6
Foil staged a 9-0 shutout with undefeated performances from Qian, senior Leena Hobson (Oakland, Calif.) and sophomore Daisy Wiseman (Austin, Texas). Epee grabbed five points, two by Lin and Sun and one by Peeler. Sabre got six points via forfeit and one from junior Rebecca Hsieh (Annadale, Va.).
Wellesley 14, MIT 13
Foil's 7-2 win blazed the trail for Wellesley. Khoo vanquished three opponents while Qian and Fung earned victory twice. Henry had two wins and Lee and Wang both tallied once in sabre. Epee's three points came from Lin (two wins) and Xu (one win).
Wellesley 22, Vassar 5
Foil won 100% of its matches, with 3-0 showings from Hobson, Huang and Wiseman. Epee reeled in seven triumphs. Xu, Sun, Peeler, Lin and senior Lily Millard (Selkirk, N.Y.) all recorded victories. Wang and Henry both found victory twice in sabre with one win from Hsieh and Lee.
Wellesley 27, Wheaton 0
Wheaton forfeited the match, resulting in a Wellesley win.
