CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Wellesley College lacrosse dropped a 24-4 NEWMAC opener to No. 17 MIT at Jack Barry Field on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) had ten points (four goals, six assists) for the Engineers (3-2 Overall , 1-0 NEWMAC) while classmate Annica Lam (Livingston, N.J.) scored six times. Lam and junior Laura Day (Old Saybrook, Conn.) both won six draw controls. Junior Christina Fradella (Massapequa, N.Y.) stopped three shots on goal.
The Blue (2-3 Overall, 0-1 NEWMAC) were led by four goals from first-year Milica Simic (Park Ridge, Ill.). Classmate Eliza Wysong (Kansas City, Mo.) had three ground balls and four draw controls. Senior Anna Blake Patrick (Portland, Ore.) started the game in goal and saved a trio of shots. First-year Scarlett McArthur (Toronto, Ontario) came in midway through the second and ended up with four saves.
MIT struck first with early goals from Lam and Thomas. Simic halved the deficit with a successful free-position shot. The Engineers added three more goals late in the first while Simic scored again to make it 5-2 after 15 minutes of play.
The hosts took a commanding lead with a 9-1 second quarter to go into halftime up 14-3. Simic finished off a hat-trick with another free-position goal with just over a minute left in the half. Lam ended the half with five goals scored for MIT while Thomas tallied twice and assisted on five other goals.Â
MIT outscored Wellesley 10-1 over the back thirty minutes, with Simic firing in the lone goal for the Blue. Tech outshot the visitors 40-10 and won 21-of-30 draw controls.
Wellesley travels to Panama City Beach, Fla. as part of spring break for a Wednesday, March 18 game against SUNY Cortland at 12:00 PM EST. MIT welcomes University of Chicago at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, March 17.
