Softball Faces Macalester, Eastern Connecticut Setbacks on Final Day of THE Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. – Wellesley College softball fell to Macalester College and Eastern Connecticut State University on the Friday finale of THE Spring Games. The Blue wraps up the trip with a 4-3 record.

Game 1 | Macalester 9, Wellesley 1 | Final 6 Innings

The Scots (8-7) poured in the runs to support junior Martha Miller (Medford, Wis.) in the circle. Miller was in control for the first four innings, only allowing three base runners with seven punchouts. Junior Tess Bojorquez (San Clemente, Calif.) pitched two scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts.

The Blue loaded the bases in the top of the first with one out but Miller induced a double play to get out of the jam without giving up a run.

After two scoreless innings, junior Jill Colgan (Las Vegas, Nev.) put the Blue on the board in the top of the third. After classmate Alena Mulhern (Kingston, Mass.) reached on an error, Colgan blasted a double to the left-center gap to give Wellesley a run.

Macalester exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third. Junior Alli Johnson (Waukee, Iowa) started the bottom of the third with a double for the Scots. After reaching third on a bunt hit from sophomore Safiya Butler (St. Louis, Mo.), Johnson crossed the plate on a wild pitch. A bunt from junior Elizabeth Welch (Carol Stream, Ill.) brought Butler in for a second run. Welch came home when junior Rebecca Heinze (Rosemount, Minn.) ripped a double over the left fielder's head. The final run of the inning came courtesy of an RBI single from Bojorquez.

The Scots offense continued into the latter half of the fourth. After putting runners on every bag, sophomore Ally Wolf (Valencia, Calif.) brought them all in with a three-run double to deep left-center, making it 7-1.

Miller drove in two with a deep double in the bottom of the sixth to bring in the final two runs and hit the mercy rule.

Colgan threw the first three innings for the Blue, allowing four runs and five hits. First-year Lauren Seyller (South Elgin, Ill.) went the final 2.2 innings for Wellesley.

Game 2 | Eastern Connecticut 4, Wellesley 1 | Final

The Warriors (5-2) utilized a big sixth inning and offense from sophomore Sam Healy (Cranston, R.I.) to defeat Wellesley.

Wellesley put up a run in the bottom half of the second inning. A hard-hit single up the middle by first-year Jailey Polski (Boise, Idaho) scored junior Emily Kulhanek (Newbury, Calif.).

The Blue applied pressure in the third by loading the bases, but the Warriors diffused the situation with an inning-ending grounder to shortstop.

ECSU returned fire with a run of its own in the top of the fourth. A triple to right from Healy brought in classmate Elizabeth Mitchell (Coventry, R.I.).

Healy was once again the hero for the Warriors in the sixth. Earlier, Mitchell scored a second run of the game advancing all the way from first on a hit to right. Healy punctuated the lead with a big two-run bash over the left field fence, putting ECSU up 4-1.

Junior Sarah Wicker (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) pitched all seven innings for the Blue, fanning six while allowing five hits, four runs and two walks in the losing effort.

Junior Hadley Marchand (Andover, Mass.) went the first three innings for the Warriors. Marchand struck out one while allowing a single run. Sophomore Julia Raymond (Woonsocket, R.I.) put four scoreless innings in relief, earning the win while punching out two.

Next up, the Blue return to Mass. and travel to Nichols College for a 3 & 5 PM doubleheader on Wednesday, March 25.
