Wheaton Collects 16-7 Win over Blue Lacrosse

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College lacrosse faced a 16-7 NEWMAC setback to Wheaton College on Wednesday night at Butler Stadium.

The Lyons (8-3 Overall, 3-2 NEWMAC) benefitted from five goals and two assists by junior Georgia Qua (Suffield, Conn.). Senior Jessica Chamberlain (Bow, N.H.) added four goals while classmate Katie Hallee (Norway, Maine) won 10 draw controls. Keeper Jenna Langan (Lincoln, R.I.) stopped 10 shots on goal.

The Blue (3-7 Overall, 1-4 NEWMAC) were paced by two goals and two assists from first-year Milica Simic (Park Ridge, Ill.). Classmate Eliza Wysong (Kansas City, Mo.) scored a hat-trick. Junior Sofia Pietrus (Raleigh, N.C.) caused three turnovers with four ground balls. Senior goalie Anna Blake Patrick (Portland, Ore.) made seven saves while first-year Scarlett McArthur (Toronto, Ontario) stopped three shots.

The Blue scored three of the game's first four goals, courtesy of scores by Simic, sophomore Merin Shell (Upper Arlington, Ohio) and Wysong. The Lyons countered with three unanswered goals in the latter half of the first putting the team up 4-3. Chamberlain, Qua and first-year Kaydie O'Neil (Sturbridge, Mass.) were the scorers.

A 4-0 run put Wheaton up 8-3 in the second. In addition to O'Neil and Chamberlain, junior Annemieke Buterbaugh (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) added a tally. Wysong and sophomore Charlotte Petersen-Kopman (St. Louis, Mo.) made it a three-goal game with a pair of scores for the Blue. Buterbaugh found the net once more late in the period and the Lyons went into halftime up 9-5.

The visitors outscored the hosts 4-1 in the third quarter for a 13-7 overall advantage. Qua connected on two shots while Chamberlain and O'Neil aided the Wheaton cause. Wysong was the lone scorer for Wellesley in the frame.

Chamberlain, Qua and sophomore Alexis Antonellis (Lyme, Conn.) all recorded goals in the final period as Wheaton wrapped up a 16-7 victory.

Wellesley heads over to Clark University for a NEWMAC scrap on Friday, April 3 at 6:00 PM. Wheaton plays at Mount Holyoke College on Saturday, April 4 at 12:00 PM.
