Two Track & Field Program Records Set at Jerry Gravel Invitational

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Wellesley College track & field saw many first place finishes and new program records in the Hammer Thrown and Triple Jump at the Jerry Gravel Invitational, hosted by Westfield State University on Saturday.

Senior Kenya Francis (Atlanta, Ga.) set a PR and a program-record in the Hammer Throw, taking second place at 45.32m, which currently ranks 89th in Division III and earns a New England DIII Championship mark. Sophomore Maya Sharar (Andover, Mass.) took fifth place at 36.94m.

First-year Sophia Wang (Livingston, N.J.) set a program record in the Triple Jump, reaching 11.23m which currently sits at 28th in Division III this year. 

Wellesley had six of the top seven finishes in the 5000m. Senior Claire Peng (Chapel Hill, N.C.) ran a PR time of 18:34.23 to earn a New England DIII cut and win the race. Classmate Elise Lanahan (Greenville, S.C.) (personal-best 18:46.53) and first-year Cadence Chang (Boston, Mass.) (19:06.80) came in second and third respectively. Sophomore Helen Yang (Woodland Hills, Calif.) (4th - 20:02.59), junior Perry Huang Kemper (Boise, Idaho) (5th - 20:16.62) and sophomore Addie Maguire (Oakland, Calif.) (6th - 20:51.40) rounded out the Blue competitors.  

In the 400m, senior Sara Maeve Klingensmith (Chapel Hill, N.C.) was the 400m champion, setting a PR in the race with a 1:00.71 time that earned a New England DIII Championship cut.

Sophomore Ellie Wolf (Irvine, Calif.) added gold in the 100m dash, clocking in at 13 seconds on the nose, down to the hundredths place. First-year Christina Yan (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) placed sixth with a 13.72 showing.

Sophomore Leeya Rice (Closter, N.J.) won the 1500m race with a personal-best time of 5:00.97. Classmate Leah Willis (Mercersburg, Pa.) scored bronze with a time of 5:04.71.      Senior Simone Beauchamp (Aurora, Colo.) narrowly missed the podium in fourth at 5:05.00.

Sophomore Julia Carmona (Bronx, N.Y.) topped the Javelin Throw field for a second week in a row, with a 31.48m distance. First-year Eliza Glick (Dumont, N.J.) claimed bronze in the event with a throw reaching 29.04m.

In the Shot Put, Francis grabbed silver by throwing 10.57m. Sharar placed sixth with a 9.74m distance.

Wang was the 100m Hurdles runner-up, finishing the event at 17.35.

Sharar led the way in Discus Throw, claiming third with a distance of 33.09m.

First-year Sophia Trabuco (Rochester, Minn.) finished third out of 18 in the 800m, hitting the finish line at 2:28.33.

In the Long Jump, Yan came in seventh with a 4.88m distance. Classmate Shriya Kundranda (Scottsdale, Ariz.) finished eighth at 4.76m while sophomore Abigail Choi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) jumped 4.56m to claim 10th.

In the 4x400m Distance Medley Relay, Chang, Rice, Willis and Trabuco came in second place with a time of 4:16.66.

Up next, the Blue will host a tri-meet with Mount Holyoke College and Smith College at 10:30 AM on Saturday, April 18.
