Blue Softball Adds Pair of Wins versus Framingham State; Colgan Records 100th Strikeout

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College softball took a pair of wins over Framingham State University  on Thursday. Game 1 was finished after the first four innings took place last month in Clermont, Fla. before being rained out. The Blue improved to 17-10 on the year with the victories, its highest win total since 2017.

Game 1 | Wellesley 6, Framingham State 4 | Final

Wellesley junior Sarah Wicker (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) twirled 6.2 innings with seven innings and eight strikeouts. Wicker allowed four unearned runs, six hits and two walks across the game. Classmate Jill Colgan (Las Vegas, Nev.) earned the save with the final out of the game.

Previously in Clermont, Fla. - Wicker had thrown all four innings, allowing only one hit and one walk, while fanning six.

Both of Wellesley's runs came in the top half of the second inning. Sophomore Natalie Nicol (Crockett, Texas) blasted a triple to right center that allowed junior Anisa Rodriguez (La Quina, Calif.) to cross the plate. Nicol later came in on a single up the middle from Mulhern.

Thursday - The Rams (14-18) nearly put up a run in the latter half of the fifth. Sophomore Audrey Gauthier rounded third on a single to center by junior Eliza Carignan (Epsom, N.H.). However, first-year Brooklyn Awad (Montclair, N.J.) threw Gauthier out at the plate with Rodriguez applying the tag to keep it a 2-0 ballgame.

The Blue increased its margin with four insurance runs in the top of the seventh. An Awad sacrifice fly to center field allowed Nicol to cross the plate. With the bases loaded, sophomore Brynne Mellady (Marriottsville, Md.) brought Wicker, junior Alena Mulhern (Kingston, Mass.) and first-year Jailey Polski (Boise, Idaho) in with a deep double over the left fielder's head.

Framingham State attempted to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, putting up four runs. An error up the middle brought junior Marina Cadena (Wareham, Mass.) in. Carignan followed with a three-run dinger off the top of the center field fence.

Game 2 | Wellesley 3, Framingham State 1 | Final

Colgan gave the hosts another great performance in the circle, going 6+ innings with one run allowed and striking out six, including a 100th career strikeout.

Mulhern gave Wellesley the first run of game two, with an infield single in the bottom of the third. Nicol was able to come in from second on the play with fast baserunning.

Wellesley tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth inning to go up 3-0. A single up the middle from senior Chiara Lundin (Piedmont, Calif.) brought Mulhern home. Colgan then helped her own cause, slapping a hit to left-center and bringing senior Andrea Delgado (Miami, Fla.) in for a run.

For a second straight game, the Rams attempted to launch a last inning comeback. A pair of singles put runners on first and second base. First-year Madison Blette (East Bridgewater, Mass.) drove sophomore Ava Gray (Danvers, Mass.) in with a deep single to center field. First-year Lauren Seyller (South Elgin, Ill.) came in and got the Blue its final three outs to earn a first career save.

Junior Peyton Farris (El Paso, Texas) went all six innings for Framingham State, giving up three runs, six hits and striking out two.

Wellesley travels to NEWMAC foe Emerson College on Saturday, April 25 for a 1 & 3 PM doubleheader. Framingham State hosts Salem State University at that same date and time.
