NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard Academy took an early lead that it never relinquished in a 21-4 NEWMAC victory against Wellesley College lacrosse on Wednesday night at Cadet Memorial Field.
The Bears (9-1 Overall, 6-0 NEWMAC) saw 12 points (seven goals, five assists) from senior Abby McAllister (Pleasantville, N.Y.). First-year Joely Schaumloffel (Remsenburg, N.Y.) added six scores. Goalies Kailee Heron (West Islip, N.Y.) and Kaelyn Krozy (West Friendship, Md.) combined for six saves.
Sophomore Amelia Woodard (Montpelier, Vt.) put in two goals for the Blue (4-7 Overall, 2-4 NEWMAC). First-year Eliza Wysong (Kansas City, Mo.) won five draw controls. Senior Anna Blake Patrick (Portland, Ore.) stopped a pair of shots in the opening quarter. First-year Scarlett McArthur (Toronto, Ontario) added two saves to the scoresheet.Â
Coast Guard scored seven unanswered goals in the first quarter. McAllister got hot on offense, contributing four goals while assisting on two others.
The Bears added five more goals in the second period to run the scoreboard up to 12-0. With just 95 seconds left before halftime, Woodard gave the Blue its first score of the affair.
McAllister and Schaumloffel teamed up for a trio of Coast Guard scores in the third while Woodard registered a second tally for the Blue.
The hosts won the final period 6-2 to make 21-4 on the day. Wysong and sophomore Charlotte Petersen-Kopman (St. Louis, Mo.) each found the back of the net, both assisted by junior Katie McCabe (Jupiter, Fla.).
Wellesley returns home to host Earn The W Day on Saturday, April 11 at 1:00 PM against Smith College. Coast Guard goes to Wheaton College for a 12:00 PM matchup on Sunday, April 12.
