Babson Takes Two over Blue Softball

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College earned two NEWMAC wins versus Wellesley College softball on Friday at Alumni Field. The Beavers (19-19 Overall, 11-7 NEWMAC) took a 5-0 game one and a 9-5 game two.

Game 1 | Babson 5, Wellesley 0 | Final

First-year Anna Topel (Oak Park, Ill.) pitched a complete game shutout for the Beavers in game one, striking out five while giving up eight baserunners.

Blue (18-13 Overall, 9-9 NEWMAC( seniors Andrea Delgado (Miami, Fla.) and Chiara Lundin (Piedmont, Calif.) and junior Anisa Rodriguez (La Quinta, Calif.) all had two hits in the setback.

The Beavers put the first run on the board in the bottom of the second frame. Senior Sophia Pak (New Rochelle, N.Y.) scored on an RBI single to right field by classmate Allie Cubberly (Lagrangeville, N.Y.).

Babson expanded upon its lead in the fourth inning, registering three runs. After loading the bases with singles, sophomore Maddy DeLong (Cranford, N.J.) knocked in junior Devin McCall (Virginia Beach, Va.) with a hit to center. Sophomore Bella DiCampello (Pottstown, Pa.) drove Cubberly in with a single. Junior Charlotte Raymond (Wrentham, Mass.) put the final run in with a single to center that plated junior Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.). 

Cubberly continued to give Babson offensive support by singling in Pak in the latter half of the fifth inning.

Junior Jill Colgan (Las Vegas, Nev.) started in the circle for Wellesley. Colgan threw 3.1 innings with four runs given up, 10 hits and four k's. First-year Lauren Seyller (South Elgin, Ill.) came in for 3.2 innings of relief. Seyller struck out a pair, while giving up one run and seven hits. 

Game 2 | Babson 9, Wellesley 5 | Final 

Despite recording 12 hits as a team, the Blue fell 9-5 in game two.

Babson didn't waste any time in the second game, immediately throwing a five in the runs column in the first inning. A series of walks and hit-by-pitches brought three runs in. McCall put the cherry on top with a two-run double to right-center.

A field error in the second allowed Walsh to score, running the hosts' margin to 6-0.

Wellesley got a run in the third inning. Delgado singled and swiped second base. First-year Brooklyn Awad (Montclair, N.J.) slapped a single to right field and brought Delgado in to score.

McCall scored another run to make it 7-1 in the third, singling to right and bringing home Pak. 

The Blue chipped away with another run in the top of the fourth. After loading the bases, sophomore Natalie Nicol (Crockett, Texas) grounded into a fielder's choice. Classmate Brynne Mellady (Marriottsville, Md.) came home on the play.

The Beavers upped the lead to 9-2 in the fifth. With runners on every base, junior Lexi Sealy (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) drove in Walsh and McCall with a two-run single through the right side.

The visitors countered one tally in the sixth. Junior Giana Jones (Fairfield, Calif.) singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Classmate Alena Mulhern (Kingston, Mass.) didn't let the opportunity go to waste, with an infield hit bringing home Jones.

Wellesley added two runs in the seventh to make it 9-5 by the final out. Mellady hit a single up the middle and scored first-year Tiye Claybrook (Compton, Calif.). Senior Emeline Gaunce (Los Altos, Calif.) then grounded out, scoring Rodriguez.

Junior Katie Vlacich (Concord, N.H.) gave up 12 hits and five runs over seven innings, striking one batter out.

Junior Sarah Wicker (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) struck out two during the five-run first inning. Sophomore Bella Hassett (North Granby, Conn.) came in for 3.2 innings, fanning two while allowing five runs to score. Colgan pitched a clean final 1.1 innings.

Both teams wrap up the regular season tomorrow. The Blue host a 12 & 2 PM doubleheader against Smith College that will serve as Senior Day. The Beavers play at Springfield College at the same time.
