CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Sophomore Devon Goetz (Rockville, Md.) scored the lone goal for No. 14 MIT in a 1-0 win over Wellesley College field hockey in a New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on Tuesday night at Jack Barry Field.
MIT improves to 12-2 overall and 5-1 in NEWMAC play with the victory. Wellesley falls to 5-9 on the season and 2-5 in the NEWMAC.
Goetz netted the game winning goal, her sixth of the season, at 38:50 in the second half, finishing on a fastbreak following a feed from sophomore Rayna Higuchi (Solana Beach, Calif.). The Engineers outshot the Blue 14-5 and held the advantage in penalty corners 11-3, but Wellesley junior goalkeeper Maggie Connelly (Duxbury, Mass.) finished with ten saves in the setback to keep the scoreline at 1-0. Connelly also got some help from senior Emmy Hamilton (New York, N.Y.), when she registered a defensive save to deny first year Amanda Garofalo (Fairfield, N.J.) ten minutes into the game.
Wellesley had two chances to record the equalizer late in the game. With 9:28 left to play, first year Carson Dennis (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) chased down a through-ball and had one defender to beat, however, her shot from the near side was kicked away by MIT first year goalkeeper Grace Moore (Boston, Mass.). Four minutes later, Dennis had another dangerous run straight down the middle of the field but once she got into the arc she was swarmed by the Engineers' back line.
Dennis and sophomore Mitzi Wiggin (North Hampton, N.H.) each tallied two shots to lead the Blue. Moore earned the shutout for the Engineers registering four saves.
Wellesley will host Tufts University in a non-conference game on Thursday, October 19, at 4:00 PM. The Engineers return to NEWMAC action on Saturday, October 21 at 1:00 PM as they host Clark University.
