WORCESTER, Mass. -- No. 6 Wellesley College crew placed third in the Varsity Eight (V8+) race in a Sunday morning regatta on Lake Quinsigamond that featured five of the top 13 teams in the CRCA/Division III Coaches Poll, including: No. 1 Bates, No. 2 WPI, No. 11 RIT and No. 13 Trinity (Conn.).
WPI (6:37.4) edged Bates (6:37.74) by just over three tenths of a second in an thrilling V8+ race to start the day. The Blue followed in third (6:43.78), while Trinity was fourth (6:57.73) and RIT took fifth (6:58.3).
Bates got back at WPI in the Second Varsity Eight (2V8+) race, finishing with a 6.81 second gap over the Engineers (6:59.31) and the rest of the field. The Blue were also third (7:03.07) in the 2V8+, with RIT taking fourth (7:18.33) and Trinity in fifth (7:24.84).
Wellesley jumped up to taking second in the Third Varsity Eight (3V8+) race, finishing in 7:14.03. The Blue were 12.33 seconds behind first place Bates (7:01.7) and just under five seconds ahead of third place WPI (7:19.53). Trinty (7:36.5) was fourth and RIT finished fifth (7:52.09).
In a Fourth Varsity Eight (4V8+) match race, the Blue defeated WPI, finishing in 7:18.8. Wellesley was second in a Varsity Four (V4+) match-up with Bates, as the Bobcats finished with a time of 8:10.3 and Wellesley raced to a time of 8:31.48.
Wellesley will join MIT, BU, and Radcliffe (Lightweights) next Saturday, April 20, on the Charles River in Boston in the team's final regatta prior to the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on Saturday, April 27 at 8:00 AM.
