WELLESLEY, MA – Wellesley volleyball kept its unbeaten streak alive this evening with a 3-0 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University. The Blue stand at 5-0 on the season. ECSU drops to 2-3.
Set one was an evenly matched affair, with Eastern and Wellesley trading sideouts until Eastern took a 13-12 edge halfway through the game. At 18-18, the Blue sided out on a kill from Alice Cummings (Tallahassee, Fla.) and scored six of the next seven points with strong serving from Madeleine Brumley (Lafayette, La.) to take a 25-19 win.
The second set was all Wellesley, as they tallied 13 kills and only one error en route to a 25-10 victory. Eastern regrouped and began set three as they had set one, taking a 2-0 lead and trading sideouts with Wellesley to an 11-11 tie. But the Blue used solid ball control to break the game open, scoring 14 of the next 17 points to take the set 25-13.
Molly Rathbun (Hebron, Conn.) led Easter with seven kills, while Kristianna Ibsen (Shelton, Conn.) chipped in five. Taylor Abelli (Cheshire, Conn.) and Sandra Jaques (Milford, Conn.) tallied 14 and 11 digs, respectively, and Jen Braswell (Wilton, Conn.) distributed 16 assists in the loss.
Cummings once again led the Blue offensively, notching 12 kills. Jessica Duff (Milton, Abingdon, UK)tallied 8 kills and Samantha Du (Houston, Texas) added seven. Duff led all diggers with 17, as Emily Peters (Temescal Valley, Calif.) and Cummings chipped in 16 and 15. Victoria Peng (Diamond Bar, Calif.)dished out 31 assists in the win.
The Blue are back in action tomorrow at 10:00am against Amherst College and return to the court at 2:00pm against Middlebury. Eastern will play Middlebury at 12:00pm and close out the quad tournament at 4:00pm, when they face Amherst.
