Wellesley College Soccer Downs Simmons in Wellesley Invitational

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College first-year Ashley Farnsworth (Epping, N.H.) scored twice as the Blue soccer team defeated Simmons, 2-0 and advanced to tomorrow's Wellesley Invitational title game.  The result improves Wellesley to 1-0-1 on the season while Simmons falls to 2-3-1.

Farnsworth picked up her first goal of the game just 1:44 in the match to set the score at 1-0 in favor of the Blue.  The rest of the first half was scoreless and Wellesley took the slim lead into halftime.  At the break, Wellesley had a 14-6 advantage in shots while Simmons was kept in the game by seven saves from keeper Rachel Elliott (Amherst, NH).

Simmons had their best chance to score at the 58 minute mark when a corner kick came close to drawing the Wellesley keeper out of the net, but the Sharks could not convert and the score remained 1-0 in favor of Wellesley.

In the 88th minute, Catherine Caruso (Belmont, Mass.) picked up her second assist of the season when she hit Farnsworth up the middle with a pass that was booted into the net to set the score at 2-0.

Simmons did not manage a shot over the remaining two minutes and the Blue picked up their first win of the 2008 season.

In goal for the Sharks, Elliott finished with nine saves.  For Wellesley, Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA) andSarah Gray (Montclair, VA) split time in goal, each picking up two saves.

Simmons is back in action tomorrow at 12:00pm in the consolation of the tournament, facing Montclair State.  The Blue will take on fourth-ranked Skidmore College in tomorrow's championship at 2:30pm.
