Wellesley opened the day with a convincing 22-5 win over
Smith. The Blue posted matching 8-1 wins in epee and foil,
and also got a 6-3 victory in sabre.
Leading the way for the epee squad, Ashley Paquin
(Cumberland, RI) went 3-0 while Jacqueline Shen
(Calgary, Alberta, Canada) went 2-0. Annemarie
Kocab (Farmington Hills, MA) was a winner in her only
bout, while Anne Benjamin (Fairfield, CT) picked
up two victories. Wellesley's foil team was anchored by
Hannah Braaten (Concord, MA) and Wendy
Chin (New York, NY) who both went 3-0, with Braaten
allowing just two opponent touches in three bouts. Also in
foil, Cate Yoon (Seoul, South Korea) and
Samantha Kim (Westlake Village, CT) each added a
win. In sabre, Crystal Aiken (Eden, NC) led
the squad with a 2-0 record, while Elizabeth Rowen
(Santa Cruz, CA) went 2-1. Zsofia Schweger
(Budapest, Hungary) and Diana Tantillo (Guayanabo,
Puerto Rico) picked up one victory each.
In the second round, UMass downed Smith, 19-9, with 7-2 wins in
epee and foil and a 5-4 win in sabre. Kelsey Erickson led the
UMass epee squad with a 3-0 performance, while Kelly Lynch went 3-0
in foil. Smith's Emily Willette dominated the sabre, going
3-0 in her team's 5-4 loss.
In the closing match of the day, Wellesley recorded a 20-7
victory over UMass. Paquin once again led the epee squad,
going 3-0 and leading the team to a 6-3 win. In foil, both
Chin and and Braaten remained perfect on the day with another pair
of 3-0 records, good for a 7-2 victory in foil. Rowen
finished the day strongly as well, notching a 3-0 record while
guiding sabre to 7-2 victory.
