WELLESLEY, Mass. -- With a solid all-around performance from
sophomore setter/opposite Isabel
Custodio, Wellesley volleyball downed Wheaton College
on Tuesday night at Wellesley College. The win lifts the Blue
to 9-3 overall, 5-0 in NEWMAC play. The Lyons drop to 8-11 on
the season, 2-3 in the conference.
The Blue jumped to an 11-3 lead in game one, courtesy of a
five-point serving run from Julia
Adams. The Lyons battled back with a run of
their own to trim the lead to 19-16, but Wellesley grabbed six of
the next eight points for a 25-18 win. Set two proved be all
Wellesley, as the hosts broke away early and built a 15-6 lead in
route to a 25-12 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The squads traded sideouts through the first half of set
three. With the scored knotted at 12-12, Traci
Hamanaka's serving led Wellesley to seven straight
points and a 19-12 advantage. Wheaton trimmed the lead to
20-16, but could get no closer as the Blue sealed the sweep with a
25-18 win.
First-year outside hitter Jackie Jones led the visitors at the net
with 11 kills and one block. Kristen Hunt recorded 13 digs to
lead all players and chipped in two aces as well. Becca Rose
tallied 17 assists in the loss.
Elizabeth
Campbell led the Blue with 11 kills, while
Taylor King had nine and Isabel Custodio and
Kellyn
O'Brady added seven each. Custodio led Wellesley
in three categories, recording 13 assists, eight digs, and four
blocks. Allison
Li added seven digs and Kira
Jordan chipped in three blocks.
Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, October 9, with a tri-match
at UMass Boston. The Lyons will face the hosts at 12:00pm and
Kean at 3:00pm. Wellesley takes the court tomorrow, October
6, when they host Tufts University in a 7:00pm match.
