First-Year outside hitter Julia Adams (South Pasadena, CA) hammered 13 kills on 24
attempts to lead Wellesley College to a straight-set victory over
conference rival MIT Tuesday night at Wellesley College (26-24,
25-23, 25-18). The win was the fourth straight for the Blue,
lifting them to 4-2 for the season and 3-0 in NEWMAC
competition. MIT drops to 7-5, 2-1 in the conference.
Wellesley opened a 10-3 lead in set one before MIT battled back
to tie the game at 12-12. The visitors eventually took a
22-18 lead, but the Blue scored eight of the next ten points for
the 26-24 win. Set two saw more of the same, as the teams
traded sideouts until MIT inched out to a 21-19 edge. Once
again Wellesley responded with a late surge, taking game two
25-23. Set three proved to be all Blue, as they opened a 10-6
lead enroute to a 25-18 win.
Cecily Joujon-Roche (Laguna Hills, CA) led the Engineers with
eight kills, four blocks, and two aces. Trinity Leonard (Mill
Valley, CA) tallied eight kills as well, while Emma Gargus
(Columbus, OH) recorded four blocks on the night. In the
backcourt, Katie Spielbauer (Lakeview, MI) and Kate Kelly (Austin,
TX) notched eight digs each, while Sharon Hao (San Jose, CA)
distributed 28 assists in the loss.
Adams led the Blue attack with 13 kills,
while Elizabeth Campbell (Solona Beach,
CA) added nine kills andIsabel Custodio (Powell, OH) chipped in seven.
Campbell and Vivian Hu (Bellaire, TX)
anchored the Wellesley defense, recording 19 and 17 digs,
respectively. Custodio and senior
captain Victoria Peng(Diamond Bar, CA)
combined for 25 assists in the win.
Both teams return to action this weekend at the MIT
Invitational. The hosts will play North Park University
(Chicago, IL) Friday at 4:00pm on their home court. Wellesley
will play its opening rounds at Tufts University, where they face
Connecticut College at 4:00pm.
