Blue Volleyball Knocks Off Clark in Regular Season Finale

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Wellesley College got a match-high 43 assists from Isabel Custodio and the visiting Blue knocked off a hard-charging Clark University squad, 3-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's volleyball action on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Wellesley improves to an impressive 21-8 overall and 7-2 in league action, while the Cougars, who entered the day with a chance to earn to a spot in the NEWMAC Tournament, finishes its season at 10-16. Clark needed either an outright win over Wellesley or help from Mount Holyoke with a win over Babson, got neither and despite having identical 4-5 NEWMAC records, the Beavers earn the sixth and final spot courtesy of its 3-1 win over the Cougars back on September 27.

After Wellesley won the first game with relative ease, 25-11, the second was much tougher, 25-20. Clark finally came out on top in the third, collecting a 25-18. The Blue then wrapped up the match with a hard-fought 25-22 win in game four.

In addition to Custodio, first-year Sydney Carfagno had 13 kills, while Kellyn O'Brady added 12 of her own. The Blue, which entered the match as one of the league's best teams in terms of blocks, saw Megan Mills collect five to go with her nine kills and Amanda Duritsch to post a match-high six rejections to go with eight kills.

Clark, meanwhile, was led by a trio of players - Kristin McGinty, Amira Tranchell and Mel Conde – all recorded 11 kills. Kortney Kelley led the defense with 18 digs, while Rachel Spera notched her sixth match this season with 40 or more assists, handing out 40.

Wellesley will enter the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will host No. 6 seed Babson on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.
