WALTHAM, Mass. – With the sabre squad leading the way, the Brandeis University women's fencing team topped Wellesely College, 14-13, in fencing action Tuesday night at Brandeis.
Wellesley took both the foil and epee competitions, but sabre proved to be the Blue downfall, as the squad fell 9-0. The 14-13 score is the closest a fencing match can finish.
Senior Anna Hanley led the Judges sabre squad to the undefeated win over the Blue. She and her team mates sophomores Zoe Messinger and Emmily Smith were all 3-0 in their bouts.
Brandeis struggled in foil and epee, suffering losses in both weapons. Wellesley seniors Hannah Braaten and Wendy Chin both went 3-0 in foil, to lead their team to a 6-3 victory.
In epee, Wellesley was paced by senior Ashley Paquin, who went 3-0, leading the Blue to the 7-2 victory. Rookie Leah Mack went 2-1, for the only Brandeis wins.
Wellesley competes again on February 17 at the New England Championships hosted by UMass Boston. The Judges fence again on Saturday, February 12 at the Stevens Tech Invitational.
