Wellesley Sweeps Wheaton on Senior Night

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Led by strong performances from all three seniors – Isabel Custodio, Vivian Hu, and Jessica Mullen -- Wellesley volleyball swept Wheaton (25-19, 25-12, 28-26) on Tuesday night at Keohane Sports Center. The win lifts the Blue to 23-3 overall, 7-0 in NEWMAC play. The Lyons drop to 8-18, 2-5 in the conference.

Wellesley stormed out of the gate in set one, using a diversified offense to build a commanding 15-4 lead. Wheaton battled back with six-point serving run from Frances Trimble, highlighted by two kills from Kendall Jacobs, to narrow the gap to 19-13. But the Lyons could get no closer as the Blue cruised to a 25-19 win.

Set two proved to be all Wellesley as the Blue jumped out to a 14-2 advantage on tough serving from Hilary Ayers and solid hitting from Mullen, Custodio, and Courtney Lang. Wheaton responded with a brief surge, but the squads traded sideouts for the rest of the set as the Blue grabbed the 25-12 win.

In set three Wellesley once again took the early edge, opening a 16-10 lead midway through the game. The Lyons rallied with six straight, including three aces from Robyn D'Agostino and two kills from Jacobs, to tie the score at 16-16. After trading sideouts, Wellesley inched out to a 24-20 lead, but the Lyons battled back with back-to-back blocks from Jacobs and Lindsay Tebbetts and two kills from Arieanne Creighton to take a 25-24 lead. Wellesley managed to fight off two Wheaton set points before back-to-back kills from Custodio and Kellyn O'Brady sealed the 28-26 win for the Blue.

Wellesley's three seniors each had solid performances to lead the Blue. Custodio racked up 11 kills, hitting .556 with just one error. She completed her 36th-career double-double by dishing out 18 assists. Mullen recorded five kills on the night, playing error-less to hit .714 as she led the Blue to .326 team hitting percentage. Mullen also added three blocks. Hu led the Blue defensively, with 12 digs, also chipping in an ace. 

Lang led the Blue with 13 kills, while Ayers recorded 16 assists and a team-high five aces. Wrapping up the Wellesley leaders, O'Brady recorded five kills and Caitlin Laughlin added four kills and three blocks. 

Wheaton was led by Jacobs who tallied eight kills and three blocks. Creighton and Megan Donahue chipped in with totals of seven and six kills, while Jackie Kochiss recorded a game-high six aces. Defensively, Tebbets racked up three blocks in just one set of action, and Megan Donahue picked up a match-high 13 digs.

Both teams are back in action at this weekend's Hall of Fame Tournament co-hosted by Smith and Mount Holyoke. Wellesley will square off against Middlebury on Friday, and play Amherst and Williams on Saturday. Wheaton battles Westfield State on Friday and will take on Colby and Bowdoin on Saturday.
