Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Wellesley College volleyball team went 2-1 against tough competition at the 2012 Volleyball Hall of Fame Tournament co-hosted by Smith and Mount Holyoke. The Blue (25-4) picked up wins against Williams and Amherst, dropping a match against Middlebury.
On Friday night at Mount Holyoke, Middlebury picked up a 3-0 sweep over Wellesley with set scores of 25-18, 25-22, and 25-23. The Blue were paced by 11 kills, nine assists and nine digs from Isabel Custodio, while Kellyn O'Brady added nine kills and eight digs. Sydney Carfagno rounded out the offense with six kills and Vivian Hu aided the defense with a team-high 13 digs.
On Saturday morning, Wellesley rebounded with a 3-1 victory over Amherst, using consistent hitting to take the match, 14-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-23. Carfagno recorded 16 kills with just two errors to hit .500, while Caitlin Laughlin racked up 11 kills, hitting .556. Hilary Ayers and Custodio split setting duties, combining for 52 assists in the match. Hu picked up 18 digs to lead the defense.
Wrapping up the tournament, the Blue used solid hitting and picture-perfect passing to record a 3-0 victory over Williams, taking the match 25-22, 25-23, 25-15. Wellesley hit .312 as a team, while not recording a single receive error in the victory.
Laughlin was unstoppable for the Blue, recording a career-high 16 kills on 20 attempts with no errors for a .800 hitting percentage. Also for Wellesley, Carfagno recorded eight kills and three aces, while Custodio picked up seven kills to go along with 20 assists. Ayers tallied 15 assists and Hu notched a 10-dig performance.
Carfagno was named to the 2012 Hall of Fame All-Tournament team, totaling 30 kills, 19 digs, eight aces, and five blocks in three matches.
Wellesley returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to MIT for a key NEWMAC match-up at 7:00pm.
