Box Score 2 KEENE, N.H. – The Wellesley College volleyball team went 2-0 at the Keene State Tri-Match to open the 2012 season. The Blue topped Endicott 3-1 (19-25, 28-26, 25-19, 25-23) in the opener and then defeated the hosts 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-16) in the nightcap.
Against Endicott, Wellesley dropped the first set, but rebounded to win three in a row to take the tightly contested match. The largest margin of victory was six or less in all four sets, with two being decided by two points.
The Blue were backed by a combined 37 kills from Sydney Carfagno, Isabel Custodio and Kellyn O'Brady. Carfagno notched 14 kills with only three errors, while adding 15 digs. Custodio racked up 12 kills with 21 assists and four digs. O'Brady rounded out the top offensive trio with 11 kills in the match.
Also for Wellesley, Hilary Ayers split setting duties with Custodio, recording 21 assists, while also picking up four digs. Vivian Hu accounted for a team-high 20 digs while Traci Hamanaka added 10 of her own. Megan Mills also had a solid match, posting eight kills and two blocks.
Wellesley heated up for its second match of the day, sweeping host Keene State. The Blue allowed just 31 total points for the Owls.
Custodio hit at a .583 clip, leading Wellesley with seven kills, while also picking up 12 assists. Jessica Mullen added six kills, with Carfagno and Lindsey Menichella collecting four each. Hu and Hamanaka combined for 15 digs in the match, while Alixandra Binney recorded two solo blocks.
Wellesley returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Brandeis for a 7:00pm match.
