Blue Volleyball Wins Twice on Homecoming

WELLESLEY, Mass.  – Rebounding from yesterday's heartbreaker against UMass Boston, the Wellesley College volleyball team posted matching 3-0 wins over Eastern Nazarene and Emerson on Saturday as part of Wellesley's Homecoming. The wins lift Wellesley to 16-1 overall.

In the middle match of the day, Emerson defeated Eastern Nazarene, 3-0. Emerson's season mark now stands at 9-7, while Eastern Nazarene sits at 10-9.

Wellesley opened the tri-match by sweeping Eastern Nazarene with set scores of 25-20, 25-15 and 25-10. Hitting .318 as a team, the Blue were led by seven kills each from Jessica Mullen, Isabel Custodio and Sydney Carfagno. Custodio dished out 18 assists with Hilary Ayers adding 14. Vivian Hu was the digs leader with 12, while Alixandra Binney added six kills and four blocks.


For Eastern Nazarene, Kortney Jenkins and Birdina Tuiava led the attack with seven and five kills, respectively. Tuiava also distributed 10 assists and nailed two aces. In the backcourt for the Lions, Kori Sorenson tallied nine digs, while Dana Day recorded eight.

In game two, Emerson defeated Eastern Nazarene with set scores of 25-13, 25-23, and 25-12. Emerson was led by Kat Rice who recorded 10 kills, while Katherine Westbrook, Giuli Frendak and Alyssa Thorne each picked up nine kills. Juliana Tucker had a solid all-around game with 32 assists, nine digs and three blocks. Rounding out the stat leaders, Jamie Morgan recorded a team-high 13 digs, while Heather Park and Thorne picked up three aces each.

Eastern Nazarene was led by Day who tallied seven kills and nine digs. Cayla Clinkscale recorded seven kills, while Tuiava dished out 14 assists. Sorenson was the team's digs leader, recording 10 total.

In the closer, Wellesley downed Emerson in straight sets, 25-18, 25-22, 26-24. The Lions were led at the net by Rice and Thorne with eight kills each, while Westbrook added seven. Defensively, Morgan led all players with 26 digs and Rice tallied five blocks. Tucker distributed 26 assists in the loss.

For the Blue, Custodio recorded her second triple-double in as many days, with 17 assists, 10 kills, and 10 digs. Caitlin Laughlin and Carfagno each pounded eight kills, while Kellyn O'Brady and Jessica Mullen added six a piece. Mullen also tallied a career-high seven blocks.  Hilary Ayers chipped in 16 assists and Hu picked up 17 digs.

Wellesley is back in action on Tuesday night, taking on NEWMAC and cross-town rival Babson at 7:00pm. Emerson next plays on Wednesday, traveling to Lasell for a 7:00pm GNAC tilt. Eastern Nazarene returns home on Tuesday, playing a CCC match against Salve Regina at 7:00pm.
