Box Score 2 WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Wellesley College volleyball team moved to a perfect 6-0 on the season, with two victories on the final day of the Brandeis Invitational. The Blue topped Tufts 3-1 to open the day, and then swept Emmanuel, 3-0 to close out the event held at Auerbach Arena.
Wellesley and Tufts split the first two sets, with the Blue coming out on top of set one, 25-22 and the Jumbos grabbing set two, 25-19. Sets three and four were a different story, with the Blue hitting over .300 as a team in both sets, wrapping up the match victory with 25-17 and 25-21 set victories. Megan Mills led the Blue attack, recording 15 kills to go along with six blocks and just three errors. Isabel Custodio has a great all around game, tallying 14 kills, 25 assists and five digs.
Also against Tufts, Sydney Carfagno picked up 10 kills and eight digs and Caitlin Laughlin added six kills and five blocks. Hilary Ayers dished out 17 assists, while Traci Hamanaka (21 digs) and Vivian Hu (16 digs) headed up the defense.
In the closer against Emmanuel, Wellesley grabbed game one 25-19 while hitting at a .428 clip, with Mills and
Kellyn O'Brady leading the way with five kills each. The Blue battled to take a tight second set, 25-19, with two late kills from Custodio to seal the win. Wellesley seized the momentum quickly in game three, cruising to a 25-8 win for the 3-0 sweep.
Carfagno led the Blue attack with nine kills in the match. O'Brady and Mills added seven and six kills, respectively. Wellesley was particularly strong at the defensively, amassing nine team blocks as Mills and Laughlin led the team with three a piece. Hu anchored the back court, with 12 digs, while Carfagno added eight and Hamanaka chipped in seven. Ayers and Custodio combined for 28 assists in the win.
Wellesley is back in action on Tuesday evening, traveling to Mount Holyoke College at 7:00pm in the NEWMAC opener for both teams.
