WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Wellesley College crew team opened the 2013-14 season in style, posting a win at the Snake Regatta held on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA.
Wellesley first varsity boat outraced a field of 22 competitors, en route to the team's first ever win at the event. Wellesley's 1V finished in 16:08.23, outdistancing NEWMAC-rival WPI's final time of 16:10.101. Division-I Holy Cross took third in 16:18.214, while Simmons placed fourth overall in 16:43.272.
The Blue second varsity boat ranked 11th overall and third amongst second varsity competition. Wellesley's 2V had a final time of 17:27.512, behind only WPI (17:19.68) and Holy Cross (17:20.868).
Wellesley's third varsity boat finished the race 16th overall, but first among third varsity competition. The Blue recorded a time of 18:07.446, outpacing its nearest 3V competition, WPI, who finished in 18:42.510. Wellesley's 3V also finished ahead of three second varsity boats.
In novice racing, Wellesley's first boat finished second overall. The Blue 1N recorded a 17:59.037, behind only WPI, who finished in 17:46.169.
Wellesley's second novice boat finished 12th overall in the novice race, and first amongst second novice competition. The Blue 2N recorded a time of 20:37.922, finishing ahead of Simmons' second boat, that recorded a 20:39.369.
Wellesley crew is back in action at the historic Head of the Charles next Sunday. The Blue will race in the women's collegiate eight event, which will begin at 3:59pm on Sunday.
