WALTHAM, Mass. – The Wellesley College fencing team finished 10th overall at the 2013 New England Intercollegiate Championships, hosted by Brandeis University.

The Blue fenced tough competition in the 16-team field, led by the epee squad who finished sixth overall. The sabre squad ended the day 12th overall, while foil finished in 13th place. Individually, the field was divided into three flights for each weapon, with one fencer competing in each of the flights, contributing to the overall team total in that weapon.

Leading the way for the Blue, the epee squad compiled an overall record of 27-16. In the A and B flights, first-year Charlotte Treadwell and sophomore Kathryn Ledbetter each compiled 10-5 marks and missed out on a spot in the finals based on number of touches. Treadwell ended the day in sixth place in the A flight, while Ledbetter finished fifth in the B flight. Also competing strong for the Blue in epee, sophomore Diana Lee finished seventh overall, recording seven victories.

In foil action, three Wellesley competitors combined for 15 total wins. First-years Camille Samulski and Eileen Cho each recorded six wins and top-10 finishes, with Samulski finishing ninth in the B flight and Cho ranking eighth in the C flight. Also competing well, senior Elise Dong picked up three wins to finish 14th amongst strong competition in the A flight.

Rounding out the competition for the Blue, the saber team recorded 11 wins among just two fencers. In the A flight, junior Dania Wright ranked 11th with five victories, while in the B flight, senior Mariami Bekauri finished 10th with six wins.

Up next, Wellesley will return to Waltham to compete in the rescheduled Northeast Conference meet. The event will take place on Sunday, March 3rd at the Boston Fencing Club.
