WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Wellesley College fencing team wrapped up its 2012-13 regular season by going 3-3 at their second Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season. The event, held at the Boston Fencing Club, featured six rounds of action.
Despite fencing with only two sabre fencers, Wellesley picked up wins over Boston University, Dartmouth and Smith. The Blue dropped matches to Tufts, Vassar and Boston College, to complete their day.
Wellesley opened with a 21-6 win over BU, taking all three weapon battles. The Blue won 5-4 in epee, 7-2 in foil, and had a default, 9-0 win in sabre. Their second win came against Dartmouth, where the Blue edged out the Big Green, 12-10. Wellesley won epee, 6-3, but fell in foil, 6-3. In sabre, Wellesley picked up wins in three out of the four contested battles to earn the team victory.
Wellesley's final win of the day came in a 22-5 domination of Smith. The team won all three weapon matches, sweeping epee 9-0, winning foil 7-0, and taking sabre, 6-3.
Against Vassar, Wellesley came out ahead in sabre, 5-4, but dropped epee and foil by 6-3 scores. Against Tufts, the Blue fell 22-5, and against BC, Wellesley was on the wrong end of a 23-4 score.
Individually, Wellesley's two sabre fencers led the team with a combined 25 victories. Senior Mariami Bekauri posted a 13-5 record, while junior Dania Wright also had a fantastic day, going 12-6. In epee, first-year Charlotte Treadwell picked up 11 total victories, while sophomore Kathryn Ledbetter added 10. In foil, senior Elise Dong picked up nine victories, while first-year Camille Samulski added nine victories. Wrapping up the individual highlights for the Blue, sophomore Olivia Wei won five out of the six bouts she fenced in foil.
Up next, qualified Wellesley athletes will compete at the 2013 NCAA Fencing Regional. The event is hosted by St. John's University in New York, NY, and will take place on March 10th.
