Blue Soccer Rolls in 9-0 Homecoming Win Over Cedar Crest

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- A high-octane offense and a stifling defense led the Wellesley College soccer team to a 9-0 win over Cedar Crest College on Saturday afternoon during Homecoming Weekend at Wellesley. The Blue improve to 4-5 with the victory, while the Falcons dip to 2-6 with the loss.

Wellesley scored early and often, building up a 5-0 lead at the break. The second half was more of the same, as the Blue scored four more times to make it a 9-0 final. Wellesley held Cedar Crest without a shot in the contest, as the Blue piled on 27 attempts.

LJ Foster was the story of the first half, as the senior recorded four goals, including her second career hat trick. She scored the first of the game in the fifth minute, on a breakaway, and then added a second unassisted score at 17:08 to make it 2-0, Blue.

First-year Kyla Petrie pushed the Blue advantage to 3-0 with an unassisted tally of her own, this one a strike from 20-yards out in the 19th-minute. Foster scored twice more before the break, with her third coming on a 24th-minute pass from senior Emily Wilson, and the fourth, an unassisted goal in the 37th minute that made it 5-0.

At the break, Wellesley had already piled on 20 shots, while starting keeper Claire Cerda played 45 scoreless minutes, without needing to make a save. Cedar Crest's Kristina Brandveen recorded eight first half saves for the Falcons.

In the second half, Wellesley's offense rolled, as four different Blue players scored goals. First-year Gabby Hartman and sophomore Darlene Dang each recorded their first career goals in the half, while seniors Ava Mokhtari and Lena Cardoso each added scores to wrap up the Blue's 9-0 victory.

Foster's eight points on four goals led Wellesley, while Cardoso and Dang each added three-point performances. Sophomore Kat Goldsmith played the final 45 minutes in goal for the Blue, keeping Cedar Crest off the board.

The Falcons' Brandveen added a second-half save to finish her game with nine total stops.

Before the game, Wellesley honored the six members of the Class of 2014: Lena Cardoso, LJ Foster, Simone Fukuda, Ava Mokhtari, Elizabeth Stowell, and Emily Wilson. The senior class has combined for 78 points on 31 goals and 16 assists, leading the team into the NEWMAC playoffs for the past three seasons.

Wellesley is back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Western New England for a 4:30pm match-up. Cedar Crest also returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Cabrini College at 4:00pm.
