CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The Wellesley College crew team closed out its spring break trip to Maryland with a two-race sweep against Washington College on the Chester River on Saturday morning.
Fog delayed the start of the races and also shortened the course. The second varsity race was contested at 1,800-meters, while the first varsity race was shortened to 1,700-meters.
Wellesley won the first varsity eight race, recording a time of 6:05 to Washington College's 6:24. The Blue got off to a fast start in the race, powering to an open-water lead by the 500-meter mark.
In the second varsity race, Wellesley's "A" boat finished first in 6:51, followed by Washington College in 6:55. Wellesley's "B" boat wasn't far behind, finishing in 6:59, while Wellesley's "C" boat finished the race in 7:14. All three of Wellesley's boats stayed close in the race, keeping in contact through two-thirds of the course before the Blue 2V pulled away for the win.
Wellesley crew is back in action next weekend on the Connecticut River in Hadley, Mass. The Blue will take on UMass, UNH, Williams, and William Smith, in an event hosted by UMass-Amherst.
