POUGHKEEPSIE, Mass. — The Wellesley College volleyball team swept a pair of matches to open the 2014 Seven Sisters Championship, hosted by Vassar College. The Blue started the day with a 3-0 win over Mount Holyoke and then added a 3-0 victory over Smith. The wins improve Wellesley to 4-2 on the season.

Vassar also went 2-0 on the day, recording 3-0 sweeps over Bryn Mawr and Smith. Bryn Mawr went 1-1 with a win over Mount Holyoke, while Smith and Mount Holyoke both started the tournament 0-2.

Against Mount Holyoke, Wellesley hit .344 as a team, cruising to consistent set scores of 25-15, 25-15, and 25-15. Three players recorded 10 or more kills, led by senior Sydney Carfagno who hit .625 in the match with 10 kills on 16 swings and no errors. Senior Caitlin Laughlin hit .368 with 10 kills, while junior Courtney Lang added 11 kills in the win. Sophomore Brooke Fieldman contributed to the offense with six kills and four aces, while Lang also added three aces. Sophomore Taylor Jais recorded a team-high 12 digs, while classmate Maddie Koh dished out 34 assists.

Wellesley stifled the Mount Holyoke offense, with the Lyons hitting just 0.041 as a team. Emma Sweeting paced Mount Holyoke with a match-high 12 kils, while Stephany Yang and Rebecca Bland combined for 17 assists. Natalie Lyon had a team-high eight digs, while Sweeting added seven.

Wellesley had similar success against Smith, taking the match in three sets, using scores of 25-6, 25-17, and 25-14. Laughlin hit .625 with 10 kills and no errors on 16 attempts, Fieldman was nearly as effective with 10 kills and just one error, hitting .429. Carfagno posted a double-double with team-highs of 12 kills and 19 digs, while Lang added 12 digs. Koh again ran the offense, tallying 35 assists, while Jais has eight digs and six assists.

Smith recorded just 10 total kills in the match, led by Xela Miller who posted three point-winners. Dayra Diaz Marquez had a team-high 14 digs, while Erin McKissick had six assists in the match.

The Seven Sisters Volleyball Championship continues tomorrow at Vassar College. Wellesley opens the day with a 9:00am match against Bryn Mawr and then will play Vassar at 11:30am.
