Blue Soccer Tops Cedar Crest 6-0 in Senior Day

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College soccer team picked up a big 6-0 win over visiting Cedar Crest College in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon in Wellesley. The win lifts the Blue to 7-2-1 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 2-7-1 with the loss.

Wellesley celebrated senior day before the contest, and honored the class of 2015 with a dominating performance on the field. The Blue out-shot the Falcons 45-0, not allowing Cedar Crest an offensive attempt.

Despite the significant advantage in shots in the first half, Wellesley held only a slim 1-0 lead at the break. Abigail Hess got the Blue on the board in the ninth minute of play, collecting a saved shot from Melise Knowles and scoring in the right side netting.

Wellesley upped the offensive accuracy in the second half, scoring five goals to set the final to 6-0. Darlene Dang increased the lead to 2-0 with a 47th-minute strike on an assist from Shawna Dunham. Mary Lou Ferguson then made it 3-0, getting the ball just outside the six-yard box, turning and finding the back of the net for the 57th-minute score. Just under three minute later, Sofia Diaz de Villegas pushed the lead to 4-0 with a goal into the left side netting.

Wellesley added two final scores, with goals in the 67th and 90th minutes. Francesca Lapsley made it 5-0 Blue, corraling a ball that hit a defender and then beat the keeper to the left side for the strike. Starting keeper Claire Cerda then finished off the Wellesley offense, scoring her first collegiate goal in the 90th minute off a cross from Erica Chalmers

The Blue's Cerda got the win, playing the first 45 scoreless minutes. Kat Goldsmith wrapped up the shutout, playing a scoreless second half.

Wellesley soccer's class of 2015, Chloe Breider, Cerda, and Emily DiVito have led the Blue to an increase in wins in each of the last three seasons. As they wrap up their final season in Blue, all three are significant contributors on a team that has Wellesley soccer off to its best start in nearly a decade, including a regional ranking.

Wellesley is back in action on Tuesday, hosting Western New England at 4:00pm in another non-conference clash. Cedar Crest returns to CSAC action on Wednesday, heading to Centenary College.
