Hess Goal Leads Wellesley Soccer Over Simmons

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley's Abigail Hess broke a scoreless tie early in the second half, leading the Blue soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Simmons College in the Soccer Without Borders Classic, hosted at Wellesley.

The win lifts the Blue to 2-1-1 on the season, while the Sharks dip to 1-1-2.

Hess made the most of a free kick in the 48th minute, sending the ball high into the upper corner of the net from 20-yards out. It was the first goal of the season for the junior, giving Wellesley a 1-0 lead it would not relinquish.

The hosts finished the contest with a 12-1 advantage in shots. Simmons keeper Briana Hayes kept the Sharks in the game, making five saves, while Wellesley goalie Claire Cerda went untested in the shut-out win.

After Wellesley's 48th-minute goal, Hayes needed to make three more saves to keep the Blue from increasing its lead. Darlene Dang, Hess, and Melise Knowles each recorded shots on goal in the second.

The lone shot from Simmons came in the 86th-minute, when Greer Gilbert launched a strike that went high of the net.

In the other Soccer Without Borders Classic game today, Babson topped Bard, 2-0, in a game played at Babson. Tomorrow's games kick off at 1:30pm with Wellesley taking on Bard at home, and Babson playing Simmons at home.
