Fencing Competes at First Northeast Conference Meet of the Season

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Wellesley College fencing defeated the University of New Hampshire at the first Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season at Brown University's Olney-Margolies Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. Wellesley went 1-5 overall at the event, also facing Brandeis, MIT, Sacred Heart, Boston College and host Brown.

Wellesley 23, New Hampshire 4

7-2 wins in foil and sabre spurred Wellesley to a big 23-4 victory over UNH in the team's opening contest on Saturday afternoon. First year Jennifer Chien (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore Vanessa Willoughby (Glen Rock, N.J.) each notched two bout victories to lead the foil squad, while Jasmine Davis (Long Valley, N.J.) continued her hot start to the season with a 3-0 record in sabre.

Brandeis 18, Wellesley 9

The Judges earned a 5-4 win in foil and a 9-0 win in sabre to defeat the Blue. Wellesley countered with a 5-4 win in epee, thanks in part to a 3-0 record from sophomore Emma Brewer-Wallin (Salem, Ore.). Senior Charlotte Treadwell also won a pair of bouts in epee. Chien won two bouts in foil to lead the team with a 2-1 record.

MIT 20, Wellesley 7

MIT defeated the Blue in all three weapons, taking 6-3 wins in foil and epee and an 8-1 win in sabre. Chien and first year Cassandra Cronin (Johns Creek, Ga.) were the only Wellesley fencers to win a pair of bouts in the match-up, with Chien going 2-1 in foil and Cronin going 2-1 in epee.

Sacred Heart 22, Wellesley 5

The Pioneers handed the Blue their biggest setback of the day, taking 8-1 wins in both epee and sabre and a 6-3 win in foil. Chien led the way for the Blue once again, earning two victories in foil. Hood also added a foil bout win, while Treadwell and Davis added the Blue's other victories in epee and sabre, respectively.

Boston College 21, Wellesley 6

Wellesley dropped all three weapons in their penultimate match-up. The Eagles soared to a 9-0 win in sabre and took a 5-4 win in foil and a 7-2 win in epee. Chien notched two more wins, while Camille Samulski (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Hood also added bout victories in foil. Cassandra Cronin and Treadwell opened the epee competition with back-to-back wins but the Eagles took the next seven.

Brown 17, Wellesley 10

Wellesley bounce back to battle the host Bears in their final match. Brown earned wins in all three weapons, however, the Blue fought to 5-4 defeats in foil and sabre. Davis notched two more sabre wins, while first Meg Harney (Wilmette, Ill.) and sophomore Madeleine Barowsky (Framingham, Mass.) each had one.

Wellesley fencing will close out the first semester when they take on Tufts and Harvard in a tri-meet on Thursday, December 3, at 6:00 PM.
