Blue Fencing Earns Four Wins at LIU Post Invitational

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Wellesley College fencing closed out its first semester schedule with four victories in five rounds at the LIU Post Invitational on Saturday. The Blue put together four-consecutive wins over Wagner, NJIT, Fairleigh Dickinson and host LIU Post, before Drew spoiled Wellesley's bid for a perfect day in the fifth and final round.

Wellesley 25, Wagner 2

Wellesley cruised to a 25-2 victory over Wagner in their opener, earning a 9-0 win in epee and a 7-2 victory in foil. The Blue took a 9-0 final by default in sabre. Junior Emma Brewer-Wallin (Salem, Ore.) and sophomore Cassandra Cronin (Johns Creek, Ga.) each went 3-0 in epee, while junior Taylor Hood (Lexington, Ky.) and first year Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) were both 3-0 in foil in the opening round.

Wellesley 19, NJIT 8

The sabre squad joined the action in the second round, posting a 9-0 victory as senior captain Jasmine Davis (Long Valley, N.J.), junior Madeleine Barowsky (Framingham, Mass) and sophomore Meg Harney (Wilmette, Ill.) each went 2-0 against a short-handed NJIT side. Hood and Maurer continued their success in foil, leading the Blue to a 6-3 win with records of 3-0 and 2-1, respectively. In eppe, Brewer-Wallin and Cronin each went 2-1, but Wellesley dropped a 5-4 decision.

Wellesley 16, Fairleigh Dickinson 11

The sabre team earned one of the two weapon wins in Wellesley's 16-11 third round win over Fairleigh Dickinson, posting a 6-3 win, behind a 3-0 mark from Davis and a 2-1 record from Harney. The Blue also grabbed a 6-3 win in foil, rallying from an early deficit to win three straight bouts. Despite wins from Brewer-Wallin (2-1), Cronin (1-2) and junior Hannah Schmidt (Oshkosh, Wis.) (1-0) the Blue fell 5-4 in epee.

Wellesley 19, LIU Post 8

The Blue posted a fourth victory in-a-row against the host Pioneers, taking an 8-1 victory in foil and a 7-2 win in sabre, while dropping a 5-4 final in epee. Hood and Maurer each posted perfect marks again in foil and first year Sarah Guise (Silver Spring, Md.) added a win. In sabre, Davis went 3-0 for the third consecutive round. Barowsky and Harney each finished with 2-1 marks. Cronin and Brewer-Wallin each had two wins in the Blue's narrow defeat in epee.

Drew 15, Wellesley 12

Davis and Harney finished the day with a pair of victories, while Barowsky grabbed one to earn Wellesley the difference.
