Maurer Leads Blue Fencing To 5-2 Record at Vassar Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Wellesley College fencing put together a 5-2 record over seven rounds of competition on Sunday at the Vassar Invitational. The Blue defeated CCNY, Yeshiva, Wagner, LIU Post and Haverford to improve to 12-2 overall on the season.

Junior Brie Maurer () led the foil squad and the team with a 19-2 record, going 3-0 in six of seven rounds to improve to 35-4 in bouts during the 2018-19 season. Sophomore Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain) had the top mark for the Blue in epee, at 11-3, while first year Yasemin Ersen (Newton, Mass.) had a team-high nine victories (9-5) in sabre. 

Stevens 14, Wellesley 13

Only one bout separated the Ducks and Blue in the opening round of the day, as Stevens put an end to Wellesley's unbeaten streak with a 14-13 victory. Stevens took victories of 7-2 in sabre and 6-3 in foil, despite a dominant 8-1 win for the Blue in epee, as Calventus-Coveney and Panya Tang (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) led the way with records of 3-0 and 2-0, respectively. 

Wellesley 24, CCNY 3

The Blue got back to their winning ways with a 24-3 rout of CCNY in the next round. Maurer and Molly McLachlan (Chapel Hill, N.C.) each posted 3-0 marks in foil, while Calventus-Coveney and Sam Wolstenholme-Britt (Cary, N.C.) were each 2-0 to pace the epee squad. Wellesley was a perfect 9-0 in sabre, with Sarah Guise (Silver Spring, Md.) leading the way with a 3-0 record.

Wellesley 26, Yeshiva 1  

Wellesley downed Yeshiva for the second time this season with a 26-1 victory in round three. The Blue won by default in epee and in three rounds of sabre. Maurer, McLachlin, Lucille Tsao (Succasunna, N.J.) and Jenn Horkovich all went undefeated in foil, while Gaby Inchoco (Fairfield, Conn.) had a team-high two wins in sabre. 

Northwestern 22, Wellesley 5  

Northwestern rolled to a 22-5 victory over the Blue in the team's toughest test so far this season. Three of Wellesley's five bout victories came in sabre, where Ersen went 2-1 and Lauren Park (Wayne, N.J.) was 1-2. Maurer and Wolstenholme-Britt picked-up wins in foil and epee, respectively. 

Wellesley 20, Wagner 7

The Blue bounced back from the setback to Northwestern, defeating Wagner, 20-7, for the first of three straight victories to end the day. Ersen clinched a narrow 5-4 win in sabre with a victory in the final round, while Park and Inchoco each went 2-1. Wellesley took wins of 8-1 in foil and 7-2 in epee.   

Wellesley 24, LIU Post 3

Maurer, McLachlin, and Calventus-Coveney each went 3-0 and the Blue earned six wins by default in sabre to defeat LIU Post 24-3. The win was the second of the season for the Blue over LIU Post, following a 25-2 win last weekend. 

Wellesley 24, Haverford 3 

Wellesley closed out the day with a second straight 24-3 victory, this time defeating Haverford. The Fords scored all three of their victories in sabre, as the Blue earned 9-0 sweeps in both foil and epee. Maurer, McLachlin, and Tsao were all 3-0 in foil. Wolstenholme-Britt added a 3-0 round in epee, with Calventus-Coveney and Cassandra Cronin (Johns Creek, Ga.) adding records of 2-0. Park had a team-high two wins in sabre. 

The Blue will open the Northeast Fencing Conference season next Saturday, November 17, at MIT. All day action begins for the Blue at 11:00 AM.
