CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Wellesley College fencing sophomore Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain) posted a 15-0 record in epee to lead the Blue to a 4-2 mark at the first Northeast Fencing Conference Meet of the season on Saturday at MIT. Wellesley defeated UNH, MIT, Sacred Heart and Brandeis, but dropped close finals to Boston College and Brown. The Blue are now 16-4 on the season. 

Junior Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) and sophomore Lucille Tsao (Succasunna, N.J.) finished with matching records of 14-4 to lead the Blue in foil. Sophomore Lauren Park (Wayne, N.J.) had the top mark for Wellesley in sabre, finishing with a 12-3 mark across the six rounds of competition. 

Boston College 15, Wellesley 12 

The Blue dropped all three weapons by scores of 5-4 in a had-fought setback to Boston College. Calventus-Coveney posted a 3-0 mark in epee to lead the Blue, as Maurer and Tsao were both 2-1 in foil and Park was 2-1 in sabre. The Eagles clinched all three weapons before the final bout in foil, epee, and sabre and held on for the close victory

Wellesley 22, UNH 5

Wellesley rebound nicely from a narrow opening round setback with a 22-5 rout of UNH. Maurer, Molly McLachlan (Chapel Hill, N.C.), and Tsao helped the Blue to a 9-0 sweep in foil. A final bout win from senior Cassandra Cronin (Johns Creek, Ga.) clinched a 5-4 win in epee, while a 3-0 round from Gaby Inchoco (Fairfield, Conn.) helped the Blue take an 8-1 win in sabre.

Wellesley 18, MIT 9

Wellesley earned an 8-1 win in foil and a 6-3 win in sabre to defeat MIT, 18-9, for the first time during the tenure of Head Coach Ariana Klinkov. The Engineers countered with a 5-4 in epee despite another 3-0 round from Calventus-Coveney. Maurer, McLachlin, and Tsao were dominant in foil, taking an 7-0 lead before MIT won a bout. Sophomore Hanamei Shao (Vandenberg AFB, Calif.) clinched the win in sabre with a 5-2 victory in the eight bout of the round.

Wellesley 19, Sacred Heart 8

Tsao and Mauer posted perfect round in an 8-1 win in foil that helped propel the Blue to a 19-8 victory over the Pioneers. First year Sam Wolstenholme-Britt (Cary, N.C.) added a 2-1 mark to help the Blue take a 6-3 win in epee. The Blue earned three wins by default in sabre but clinched a 5-4 win as both Park and first year Yasemin Ersen (Newton, Mass.) went 1-1. 

Wellesley 17, Brandeis 10

Wolstenholme-Britt and Calventus-Coveney each went 3-0 in epee and Park posted a perfect 3-0 round in sabre as Wellesley defeated Brandeis, 17-10. Wellesley took wins of 8-1 in epee and 6-3 in sabre but dropped a 6-3 final in foil. First year Panya Tang (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) also added two wins in the foil victory, while Ersen finished 2-1 and had the clinching win in the sabre squad's 6-3 victory. 

Brown 14, Wellesley 13

Wellesley's four-round win streak came to an end at the hands of Brown, as the Blue dropped a one-point setback in the finale. Calventus-Coveney completed her perfect day and Park went 3-0 in sabre but a 3-6 setback in foil and a 4-5 loss in sabre helped Brown take the win despite Wellesley's 6-3 victory in epee. 

Wellesley will travel to Harvard on Tuesday, December 4, for a 6:00 PM tri-dual with the host Crimson and Tufts University.
