Wellesley Crew Places Second in V8+, 2V8+ at New England Rowing Championship

WORCESTER, Mass. - Both the V8+ and 2V8+ earned second place in the grand finale for Wellesley College crew against high level competition in the New England Rowing Championship at Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday.

Wellesley made a big statement in the V8+ opening heat with a 6:37.85 that gave Blue Crew plenty of open water between themselves and second place Smith. In the grand final Blue Crew clinched second place with a 6:41.50 that trailed only MIT (6:38.04).

The 2V8+ was able to take a lead that they never gave up en route to a 6:53.13 victory in the opening heat. Blue Crew was the runner up in the grand final, inching past Tufts by a mere hundredth of a second with a 6:47.16. Bates was the 2V8+ grand finale champion.

Wellesley's 3V8+ was neck and neck with Bates from the start to the final buoys in the opening heat. Blue Crew was able to gain the slightest bit of separation at the end to win the heat with a 7:03.61. The 3V8+ finished fourth in the grand final with a 7:05.40 while Tufts was the 3V8+ winner.

In the 2V4+ race Blue Crew placed second in their opening heat with a 7:59.56, a mere 1.3 seconds behind Bowdoin. Wellesley placed fourth in the grand final, shaving 10 seconds off of their time for a 7:49.130 to defeat Amherst and New Hampshire while Division I Rhode Island placed first.

Wellesley returns to Lake Quinsigamond next Friday at 8:30 AM to compete in the National Invitational Rowing Championship.
