MIT Pushes Past Blue Volleyball, 3-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 4 MIT shut out Wellesley College volleyball 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-14) in a NEWMAC match on Tuesday evening at Rockwell Cage.

Sophomore Kayleigh May (Camarillo, Calif.) notched a game-high 35 assists for the Engineers (18-0 Overall, 6-0 NEWMAC). Grad student Consecreta Rozario (Cary, N.C.) and first year Julia Tolstova (Redlands, Calif.) both recorded 10 kills and senior Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.) scooped up 12 digs.

The Blue (7-6 Overall, 2-4 NEWMAC) were led by a whopping 21 kills on a .275 hitting percentage by sophomore Kate Giang (Corte Madera, Calif.). Junior Kaija Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) provided 16 digs while sophomore Noelle Winn (San Francisco, Calif.) and first-year Else Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) each had double-digit assists.

Wellesley rushed out to a 5-2 lead in the first before MIT leveled the score at 10-10. Each team had a 3-0 run before the score knotted up at 15-15. The lead continued to change hands through 23-23, when MIT earned a kill and capitalized on an error to finish out the set.

The key moment in the second set came with the Engineers leading 15-14. A 5-0 run, featuring kills from Tolstova and Rozario, gave MIT breathing room and set the tone for a 25-18 set.

The third set was never in danger for the Engineers, who utilized 10 kills and a .400 hitting percentage to put away the Blue in a 25-14 set.

Both teams will host competition on Saturday, October 19. The Blue will welcome Clark University to Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse at 12:00 PM. The Engineers play WPI (11:00 AM) and Eastern University (3:00 PM) in a tri-match.
