WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College basketball dropped a non-conference home opener to Colby-Sawyer College, 56-51, on Saturday at the Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.
Wellesley (2-1) sophomore Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.) posted a game best 19 points to go with 10 rebounds, four steals and three assists. First-year Ava Shane (Plano, Texas) grabbed eight rebounds.    Â
Junior Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) and senior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) each scored 16 points to lead Colby-Sawyer (4-0). Mitchell also hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds. Senior Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) also reached double figures with 11 points to go with nine boards. Â
A layup by first-year Stacy Chen (Minneapolis, Minn.) pulled the Blue within one at 7-6 with 3:56 to play in the first. The Chargers ended the frame on a 5-1 run to take a 12-7 lead after 10 minutes of action. Chen had four of the Blue's seven points.Â
Colby-Sawyer increased its lead to 16-10 early in the second. Wellesley answered with three straight buckets, including a pair of Barrow layups, to knot the score at 16-16. The game was tied again at 23-23 when Wellesley junior Yitzel Serna (Palmdale, Calif.) drained a trey with 1:23 left in the half. Colby-Sawyer took a 25-24 lead into the halftime break. Barrow led all players with 10 in the half.Â
The visitors scored a quick five points to open the third and a 30-24 lead. The lead ballooned to nine midway through the quarter, but the Blue cut the deficit to a bucket, 41-39, after a Shane layup with 1:25 to go. Holt then connected from long range to put the Chargers in front 44-39 with one quarter to play. Â
Colby-Sawyer held a lead for the remainder of the game as each team scored 12 points in the fourth quarter for the 56-51 final.Â
