WESTFIELD, Mass. — St. Lawrence University remained undefeated with a 63-40 opening round win against Wellesley College basketball at the Westfield Gas and Electric Tip-Off Tournament at Westfield State University on Friday night.
The Saints (5-0) were led by a 15 point, 13 rebound double-double from sophomore Elizabeth Flynn (Brentwood, Tenn.). 11 different members of St. Lawrence scored in the game.
Sophomore Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.) put up nine points with seven rebounds for the Blue (2-3). First year Ava Shane (Plano, Texas) contributed eight points, including four made foul shots, and grabbed five boards.
St. Lawrence lept out to a 7-2 lead in the first two minutes before Wellesley answered with five points of its own. A 6-0 run put the Saints up 13-7. The Blue cut the deficit to five at 18-13 after one period of play.
The Saints outscored the Blue 15-6 in the second quarter. After taking an eight-point lead at 27-19, St. Lawrence hit the final three buckets of the quarter to head to the locker room up 33-19.
The third quarter featured even play from both with the Saints outsourcing the Blue 11-10. St. Lawrence shot 6-for-14 in the fourth to close out a 63-40 contest.
The Blue will face Utica University in the consolation round of the tournament tomorrow at 12:00 PM. The Saints take on Westfield State University in the finals at 2:00 PM.
