Top Seeded Babson Defeats No. 4 Seed Blue Field Hockey in NEWMAC Semifinals

BABSON PARK, Mass. – No. 4 seed Wellesley College field hockey fell at No. 1 seed Babson College, 5-0, in the NEWMAC Championship Semifinals on Thursday night at MacDowell Field.

The Blue ends the season with a 10-10 record after making a fifth straight postseason appearance with two trips to the semifinals in that span.

The No. 7 ranked in NCAA Division III Beavers (17-3 Overall) tallied a pair of goals in the first quarter. Senior Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) delivered the damage for Babson with grad student Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.) assisting on the first goal at the 8:37 mark.

The Beavers upped their advantage to three late in the second quarter. Evans added a fifth point to the night by setting up junior Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.).

After a scoreless third, Babson tacked on a pair of goals from DiGiovanni and graduate Sophie Croci (Columbus, Ohio) for the 5-0 final.

First-year goalie Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) finished with three saves for Wellesley, while senior Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) earned the victory for Babson.

Top-seeded Babson will now host the second seed and No. 17 MIT in the NEWMAC Championship Finals on Saturday, where the Beavers will compete for a fourth consecutive title.
