SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College volleyball concluded its regular season with a 3-0 NEWMAC win at Mount Holyoke College on Saturday. The Blue (13-8 Overall, 6-5 NEWMAC) won the sets 25-17, 25-17 and 25-13 to extend its win streak to five.
Sophomore
Kate Giang (Corte Madera, Calif.) recorded 16 kills to lead all players. First-year
Sarah Jin (San Jose, Calif.) hit .727 with eight kills and no errors. Senior
Rachel Xu (Beijing, China) contributed seven kills on .400 hitting. Two-time NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week junior
Kaija Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) picked up a match-high 23 digs.
The Lyons (13-13 Overall, 2-9 NEWMAC) received seven kills from junior Madeline Barton (Brookfield, Wis.), while sophomore Kyra Staples (Chatham, Ill.) tallied 16 digs.
Backed by seven kills from Giang, Wellesley captured the first set 25-17. The Blue jumped out to a 9-4 lead to open the set. Mount Holyoke cut it back to three at 14-11 before Wellesley fired off seven straight points to put the set out of reach.
The second set featured an identical scoreline. Wellesley went up 10-4 early before Mount Holyoke trimmed its deficit to three at 11-8. An 8-3 run put the Blue up 19-11 and the Lyons never got the margin back under five.
Wellesley continued control play at the net and hit .379 with 16 kills in the third set. The visitors opened the frame on a 6-2 run, capped by an ace from
Kaija Kunze-Hoeg. Mount Holyoke clawed back to pull within 10-9 but the Blue pulled away for a 25-13 victory.
The Blue will now await the release of the NEWMAC Women's Volleyball Championship bracket in order to learn its First Round opponent.
