Wellesley Volleyball Sweeps Fisher, 3-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College volleyball improved to 4-1 on the season with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-23) victory over Fisher College as part of #EarnTheW Day on Saturday at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.

Sophomore Kate Giang (Corte Madera, Calif.) led all players with 14 kills to go with seven digs and three aces. Sophomore Caroline Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) contributed nine kills and seven digs, while senior Rachel Xu (Beijing, China) chipped in with four kills and a couple of blocks. First-year Else Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) posted a double-double of 18 assists and 14 digs. Junior Kaija Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) came away with a match high of 19 digs and three aces. 

The Blue cruised to a 25-12 win in the first set behind 12 kills and eight aces. Meyer, Giang and Xu had three kills apiece. Sophomore Evelyn Hill (Rocklin, Calif.) had three aces and a kill.

Wellesley carried the momentum into the second set and began with a 10-4 run, capped by a kill from first-year Ella Mancuso (North Andover, Mass.). The home team went on to win 25-13 and had another 12 kills. Giang had six, while Meyer added four. 

The third set was tightly contested throughout. Neither team had a lead larger than three points. With the set tied at 13-13, Fisher scored the next two points and held a lead until the Blue tied things up at 23-23. Trailing 23-21, Wellesley rallied to score the next four points on a pair of Giang kills, an Else Kunze-Hoeg kill and a Hill ace to clinch the match. Hill finished with four aces. 

Five Falcons had three kills in the match. First-year Alondra Farinacci (Ponce, P.R.) finished with three kills, nine assists and eight digs. Senior Edsyl Irizarry (Guaynabo, P.R.) tallied a team best 18 digs. 

Wellesley heads to University of New England for a 5:00 PM matchup on Saturday, September 21. Fisher takes on Vermont State Lyndon at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, September 17.
