NORTON, Mass. – Wellesley College volleyball swept NEWMAC foe Wheaton College, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-9), inside Emerson Gymnasium on Saturday.
Wellesley (6-2 Overall, 1-1 NEWMAC) sophomore Kate Giang (Corte Madera, Calif.) led all players with 13 kills and five aces. Sophomore Evelyn Hill (Rocklin, Calif.) tallied eight kills, nine digs and three aces. Senior Rachel Xu (Beijing, China) hit .417 with six kills and four blocks. Sophomore Noelle Winn (San Francisco, Calif.) recorded 16 assists, three aces and four digs, while junior Kaija Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) picked up a match best 16 digs.
The Lyons (6-8 Overall, 0-2 NEWMAC) were led by 15 assists from sophomore Ajsa Orban (Budapest, Hungary). Classmate Jackie Hochberg (Tampa, Fla.) added 13 digs while junior Hollis Hanson (Parker, Colo.) had four total blocks.
Wheaton jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the first set. Wellesley tied the frame at 7-7 and the two teams remained neck and neck through 17-17. The Blue took eight out the final 12 points, capped off by a kill from Giang.
Wellesley started the second with five points before the Lyons earned six of seven points to knot the set at 6-6. An 8-2 run put the Blue firmly in the driver's seat. Despite a late Lyons run, Wellesley took a 25-19 second set that featured 11 kills for the Blue.
The Blue cruised in the third with a 25-9 score thanks to 15 kills on .560 hitting. The team added five aces to end the match with 15.
Wellesley returns to Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse to host Babson College at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, October 1. Wheaton competes at Coast Guard Academy at 6:00 PM that same night.
