WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College topped non-conference foe Worcester State University, 3-0, by scores of 25-16, 25-4 and 25-22 on Saturday at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.  Â
Sophomore Kate Giang (Corte Madera, Calif.) recorded 10 kills, six digs and three aces to lead the Blue. First year Else Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) posted 22 assists in two sets. Junior Kaija Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) collected 22 digs, six aces and four assists. Sophomore Evelyn Hill (Rocklin, Calif.) contributed six kills, while sophomore Emily Goldstein (Houston, Texas) chipped in with three blocks and a couple of kills.Â
The Blue took an early 7-3 lead behind four kills from Giang. Wellesley later led 16-7 and 22-11, forcing a pair of Worcester State timeouts. The Lancers cut into the deficit with a 4-1 run, but an ace by Wellesley senior Mikayla Tansil (Warren, Mich.) ended the set for the Blue, 25-16. Giang finished the set with six of the Blue's 17 kills, while three other players had three kills apiece.Â
Wellesley started strong in the second set with an 8-1 lead and never looked back. After holding a 14-4 lead, the Blue scored the next 11 points to secure the 25-4 win. Kaija Kunze-Hoeg had two aces in a row to put Wellesley ahead 2-0 in the match.Â
Worcester State turned things around to begin the third set and took an 8-5 lead. Wellesley erased the deficit to tie the score at 10-10. The Lancers scored the next seven points to take a comfortable lead. Trailing 21-15, the Blue rallied with a 10-1 run to complete the comeback and take the set 25-22 and the match 3-0.Â
Junior Cassidy D'Esposito (Medford, N.Y.) led the Lancers with five kills. Senior Angela Colonis (Waterford, Conn.) added three kills on four attempts. First-year Kaitlyn Anthony (Gastonia, N.C.) picked up a team best eight digs.Â
The Blue continue a five-game homestand on Tuesday, September 10 against Regis College at 6:00 PM. The Lancers return home on Tuesday, September 10 for a 7:00 PM matchup with UMass Dartmouth.
